=New e provide them with a complete ultrasonic and motion control system, comprising the MicroPulse 2 inspection controller, a sea-to-surface interface and PC-based interpretation software and

graphics package. The system is intended to be operated in the British and Norwegian North Sea sectors. It is capable of transmitting ultrasonic data over distances in excess of 600 m and will enable

automated, ultrasonic, sub-sea pipeline inspections at greater sea depths.

-Previe A S T M international symposium on computerization and use of materials property data Papers are invited for the Fourth International Symposium on Computerization and Use of Materials Property Data, co-sponsored by ASTM standards-writing Committee E-49 on Computerization of Material and Chemical Property Data and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The symposium will be held from 6-8 October 1993 at NIST in Gaithersburg, MA, USA. The purpose of the symposium is to increase the value, as seen by end users, of materials data incorporated within computerized materials information systems, which will lead to greater reliability, acceptability, and usage of these systems. To this end, preference will be given to papers on one or more of the following themes: • End user participation in the development of computerized materials and information systems • Materials-oriented applications

of advanced computing technologies, such as expert systems, object-oriented databases, hypermedia, and neural networks Effect of user interface design upon the acceptability of computerized materials data Integration of computerized materials data into design and manufacturing Data analysis for quality and reliability Economic impact of computerized materials information systems in actual use Legal liability of developers and end users of computerized materials information systems

Prospective authors are asked to submit a title, a 250-300 word abstract, and an ASTM Paper Submittal Form by October 4, 1992 to Dorothy Savini, Symposia Operations, ASTM, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103-1187, Tel: +1 215 299-5413. Authors are urged not to send abstracts by fax because the copies do not reproduce clearly. A Special Technical Publication (STP) based on the symposium proceedings is anticipated by ASTM. More information on the

symposium is available from the symposium chairmen: Charles Sturrock (Tel: + 1 301 975 6027; Fax: + 1 301 926 7975) and Edwin Begley (Tel: + 1 301 975 6118; Fax: + 1 301 990 8729).

International Acoustic Emission Symposium Taking place from 26-29 October 1992, the 1 lth International Acoustic Emission Symposium will be held in Fukuoka, Japan. Sponsored by the Japanese Society for Non- Destructive Inspection it aims to bring together all who are extensively involved in applications, research and development and standards for acoustic emission. The registration fee is Y45 000, or Y20 000 for students. Fukuoka is about 1000 km west of Tokyo, and can easily be reached by plane or Shinkansen (bullet) train.
