The IFPA is an international scientific umbrella organization coordinating the activities of the existing regional placental research associations. Its purposes comprise the following: l to support the regional placental associations; l to facilitate multidisciplinary study and discussion of all aspects of placental research; l to coordinate dates, locations, and subjects for regional and international placenta meetings to be organized by the regional placental associations; l to provide a formal association that could communicate with governments, bodies, grant institutions, and private organizations; l to provide a scientific organization to which Placenta and Trophoblast Research can be associated and be both editorially as well as scientifically answerable.

The meeting will include invited and submitted oral and poster presentations, symposia, workshops and special lectures, related to the following topics. (a) Trophoblast and: cytokines, growth factors, oncogenes, receptors, suppressor genes, apoptosis, telomer-telomerase, angiogenesis; (b) Fetoplacental metabolism: fetoplacental circulation, nitric oxide and NOS, placental proteins, endocrinology, vitamin-ion transport, toxicology and pharmacology; (c) Complications of pregnancy: trophoblastic disease, intrauterine death, toxaemia, intrauterine growth retardation, maternoplacentofetal infection, immunological disorders; (d) Deciduo-trophoblastic interactions: implantation, abortion, parturition, abruptio placentae; (e) Clinical diagnosis: placental pathology, ultrasonography, Doppler imaging, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fetal monitoring, chromosome analysis (amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, biochemical markers), biochemical tests for placental function.
