TO THE EDITOR
International organization of oligochaete taxonomists At the closing session of the “Second European Colloquium of Soil Annelids” held in Jaca. northern Spain, in September 1975, the meeting resolved that ways should be investigated for achieving greater co-operation among oligochaete taxonomists. Further, because of the availability of competing classifications of the Lumbricidae, it was urged that consideration should be given to the feasibility of producing a checklist of recommended names for use by ecologists, physiologists and other non-taxonomists. Dr 0. Graff was appointed the convener of a small group of specialists to implement these resolutions. Subsequently, invitations were sent to 60 oligochaete workers to attend an international meeting at the Institut fiir Bodenbiologie, Braunschweig on 28-30 June, 1976. The programme was divided into sessions for identifying and reviewing problems, especially areas of conflicting opinion; for finding means of overcoming these difficulties and for considering the production of checklists. After full discussions the meeting concluded that there was a need for closer co-operation among specialists. It was agreed unanimously therefore to found the International Organization of Oligochaete Taxonomists.
The objects of the Organization are: To promote co-operation and the exchange of information among workers on all aspects of oligochaetology especially by arranging meetings and assisting with publishing the results of oligochaetological research. To encourage research on well-recognized problems. To initiate the preparation of any checklists deemed to be required. A Committee was elected to manage the affairs of the Organization: President Dr A. Zicsi (Budapest) Vice-President Dr 0. Graff (Braunschweig)
Professor Dr M. Dzwillo (Hamburg) Mr R. W. Sims (London)
Members
Dr F. Alvarez (Madrid), Dr M. Boucht (Dijon), Dr B. G. M. Jamieson (Brisbane)
Other founder members present: Dr N. Graefe (Hamburg), Dr B. Healy (Dublin), Dr K. E. Lee (Glen Osmond), Dr U. Meinhardt (Berlin), Mde Min Ja Song (Taegu). Dr D. E. Wilcke (Bonn). The venue and date of the next meeting have to be arranged but the Organization will meet in Europe probably in 1979. The main topic for discussion at the next meeting will be a draft checklist of the Lumbricidae with annotations drawing attention to items of conflicting opinion. It is planned that exhibits will be displayed to assist in the appreciation of the problems. The production of an annual newsheet is planned mainly to assist workers until the “Zoological Record” for the year is published. It will contain the names of new taxa and lists of new publications on oligochaetology. As this information will be derived only from reprints, authors are requested to send a reprint of each new paper to one of the joint secretaries. Membership is open to all interested workers. for details apply to: Aquatic Oligochaeta
