International plastics exhibitions Interplas 73, an international plastics exhibition sponsored by europlastics (formerly British Plastics) in co-operation with the British Plastics Federation, will be held at Olympia in London, 20-29 June 1973. It will be supported by EUROMAP (European Committee of Machinery Manufacturers for the Plastics and R u b b e r Industries). lnterplas 73 is being organized by ITF-Iliffe Exhi, bitions Ltd, a whollyowned subsidiary of Industrial and T r a d e Fairs Holdings Ltd. T h e i r address is Commonwealth House, New Oxford Street, London WC1A 1PB, UK.

Europlastica 73, the 4th International Plastics Exhibition, will be held in Brussels at Palais du Centenaire from 31 March to 8 April 1973. Raw materials, machinery and. finished articles will be on show. Europlastica, Floraliapaleis, B-9000, Ghent, Belgium.

Plastics Institute monographs Reviews of 'Carbon fibres in composite materials' by R. M. Gill and 'Fillers for plastics', edited by W. C. Wake appeared in the March 1972 issue of Composite, on pages 88 and 89, respectively. Unfortunately, it was not made clear that both these books form a part of the well-known Plastics Institute monograph series. They are published for T b e Plastics Institute by Iliffe Books, T h e Butterworth Group. Members of T h e Plastics Institute can purchase these two books at the following reduced prices: 'Carbon fibres in composite materials', £3.75: 'Fillers for plastics', ~2-80. Further French contract for BAC radomes British Aircraft Corporation's Reinforced and Microwave Plastics G r o u p has been awarded the contract for production of the radomes (radar transp a r e n t nose-cones) required for the French Exocet missle by Electronique Marcel-Dassault of France. The radomes are now in quantity production at Stevenage. Reinforced and Microwave Plastics G r o u p were recently awarded another valuable French contract for quantity production radomes for the AngloFrench Martel missile (see Composites, Volume 2, number 4, page 207. December 1971). British Aircraft Corporation Ltd, Six Hills Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK

Application of carbon fibre ribbon Carbon fibre ribbon has been used in the hull, deck and other 6RP components in one of the latest Avenger 21 power boats produced by the Avenger Boat Company (1972) Ltd in conjunction with Courtaulds, Specialised Mouldings and Don Shead. A weight saving of 30% in shell weight has been achieved by using 550 m of Courtauld's Grafil carbon fibre ribbon (see Composites, Volume 3, number 3, pp 99. May 1972). T h e new Avenger 21, called 'Two's Up', cost £1550 to build as compared with £900 for a comparable craft without carbon fi,bre reinforcement. T h e makers do not think this is a large increase, particularly since the time for laying-up and curing is doubled. International Yacht Paints I~td. a member of the International Paint Company which is a Courtaulds sul)sidiary, supplied the paints for 'Two's I!p" and they will be selling the carbon libre ribbon to the marine industry. Reinforced plastics for aerospace vehicles--US military handbook A completely n e w edition of Militarx Handbook 17 is now available, the culmination of a five-year effort of the Air Force Materials Laboratory, the Plastics Technical Evaluation Center (PLaSTV:C) at Picatinny Aresenal, the Forest Products Laboratory and the aerospace iridustry. This 342-page book is claimed to be the largest collection o1 organized data on glass reinforced plastics in existence today. T h e bulk of the data pertains to glass-fibre composites, principally of E glass with epoxide resins. Additional data is provided for S glass and for boron-reinforced composites. T h e purpose of the handbook is (1) to provide a standardized basis for the design and construction of fibre reinforced plastics composites primarily for use in aerospace vehicles; (2) to provide appropriate data on the mechanical properties of such composites; and (3) to provide design techniques and analytical procedures which account for the anisotropy of these composites and permit computation of directional properties. Although the book is intended primari!y for the use of the aerospace industry, it will be useful to anyone who uses reinforced plastics for structural purposes. T h e precise designation of the handbook is M I L - H D B K 17A, 'Plastics for Aerospace Vehicles; Part 1 - - Reinforced Plastics'. Government contractors, suppliers and those preparing to bid may secure single copies without cost by request to the Naval Publication and Forms Centre (Attention: NPFC 105), 5801 T a b o r Avenue, Philadelphia. I'a 19120. Multiple copies may be procured from the Superintendent of Documents, US Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402. "Fhc price is $2.50 per copy.
