Role of Power Doppler sonography in evaluation of therapeutic response of the knee in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatol Int 2007 Sep 1; [Epub ahead of print] Thirty JRA patients with knee involvement were studied. Clinical assessment and ultrasound was done on the same day and repeated at the end of second and sixth month of naproxen therapy. PDS was performed and degree of vascularity graded. Ultrasound indices were found to be superior to clinical. The study proved the usefulness of PDS in detection and follow-up of clinically silent cases of JRA. 2. Biswas D, Mathias A, Dayal R, Aggarwal A, Misra R, Naik S. Presence of antibodies to SSB/La is associated with decreased phagocytic efficiency of neutrophils in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Clin Rheumatol 2007 Nov 6; [Epub ahead of print] Fifty patients with SLE and 20 controls were enrolled. Phagocytic efficiency was evaluated by flowcytometry and expressed as mean channel fluorescence (MFI). The mean MFI values were significantly lower in patients with SLE than controls. Anti-SSB/La positivity was associated with lower MFI and higher frequency among patients with history of infective episodes. LPS- and LPS + IFN-gammastimulated IL-12 levels were lower among SLE patients than in controls. 3. Handa R, Bhatt SP. Premature atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus: Comment on the article by Westerweel et al. Arthritis Rheum 2007; 56: 3878–79 [Epub ahead of print] In a group of 50 patients with lupus and 50 matched controls, the authors had shown that Asian Indian patients with lupus exhibited premature atherosclerosis in the form of significantly thicker intima-media and plaque. 4. Ravindran V, Jain S, Mathur DS. The differentiation of anaemia in rheumatoid arthritis: parameters of irondeficiency in an Indian rheumatoid arthritis population. Rheumatol Int 2007 Oct 26; [Epub ahead of print]. 50 consecutive patients with RA were studied. Eighteen patients (36%) had IDA and 32 (64%) had ACD (Anemia Department of Medicine, Pondicherry, India Correspondence: Dr. V Arya, email:

of Chronic Disease). Serum iron, TIBC, MCV and MCHC had limited value in diagnosing iron deficiency. Bone marrow iron stores measurements appeared to be the most reliable method for diagnosing IDA in RA. Singh R, Aggarwal A, Misra R. J Rheumatol 2007; 34: 2285–90. Th1/Th17 cytokine profiles in patients with reactive arthritis/undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy. J Rheumatol 2007; 34: 2285–90. The authors measured levels of several cytokines in synovial fluid (SF) and sera from 51 patients with ReA/uSpA (ReA 21, uSpA 30), 40 patients with RA and 11 patients with OA. SF concentrations of IL-17, IL-6, TGF-beta, and IFN-g were significantly higher in patients with ReA/ uSpA as compared to RA patients. These results suggest that Th1 and Th17 cells could be the major agents in inflammation in ReA/uSpA. Jayachandran NV, Rajasekhar L, Chandrasekhara PK, Kanchinadham S, Narsimulu G. Multiple peripheral arterial and aortic aneurysms in Behcet’s syndrome-a case report. Clin Rheumatol 2007 Oct 11; [Epub ahead of print] Agrawal S, Srivastava R, Sharma B, Pandya S, Misra R, Aggarwal A. IL1RN*2 allele of IL-1 receptor antagonist VNTR polymorphism is associated with susceptibility to anklyosing spondylitis in Indian patients. Clin Rheumatol. 2007 Sep 27; [Epub ahead of print] The allele frequency as well as the carriage rate of allele IL-1RN*2 were significantly higher in patients with AS than the control population. The IL-1RN*2 allele was not associated with any difference in clinical disease expression. Sharma A, Bambery P, Bettadapura Shamanna S, Wanchu A, Singh S. Phrenic nerve palsy in a patient of Churg Strauss syndrome and mononeuritis multiplex. Clin Rheumatol 2007 Sep 5; [Epub ahead of print]. Danda D, Mathew AJ, Mathew J. Wegener’s granulomatosis-a rare presentation. Clin Rheumatol 2007 Nov 15; [Epub ahead of print] The authors report a lady who presented with recurrent parotitis, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and orbital cellulitis, in whom the final diagnosis was revealed after an open lung biopsy.
