NOTICE INTERNATIONAL 30CIE'I'Y ON TOXINOLOGY Tim FouRTx annual meeting of the Society was held in Atlantic City on April 13, 1965 . Approximately sixty members and their friends gathered for the cocktail hour, which was sponsored by Toxicon and Pergamon Press. The regular meeting was called to order at 9 p.m . Twenty members were in attendance. The President, Dr . F. E. RUSSSLL, presented the opening remarks and read letters of greetings from members abroad. Additional greetings were presented from members in the United States who were unable to attend the meeting. In the absence of the Secretary, the treasurer's report was read by Dr . B. C. Asl~-r . The report of the Credentials Committee was deferred until later in the evening so that the members present could study the applications of the candidates for membership. Dr. J. A. Gaxx~to presented a report on an abstracting service which would provide reprints of the articles in Toxicon on a long term basis. After some discussion, and on the advice of Dr. G>~vrraRO, it was decided to vyithhold further consideration of this service. The report of the Nominating Committee was presented by Dr. B. C. As>~-r. The Nominating Committee is composed of B. C. Aseoz-r (Chairman), H. MICI~., and P. BoQusr. Dr . S. A. Mrnrrox, Jr. was nominated for President Elect and Dr . P. R. SAUNDSRS for SecretaryTreasurer. The floor was then opened for further nominations. The recommendations of the Nominating Committee were unanimously accepted . Dr . MiNTON will take office at the close of the next annual meeting. Dr . Russlu,L discusses some of the activities of the Society during the past year . These included cooperative efforts with the World Health Organization on matters pertaining to the standardization of antivenins, with the American Association of Poison Centers on matters pertaining to bites or stings by venomous animals in the United States, and with the various Red Cross organizations for consultations and for speakers at various functions, and with the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists on the revision of a manual on the poisonous snakes of the world. Discussion was initiated on the Society's proposed International Symposium on Animal Toxins . It was noted that this was not the same Symposium that was planned for Sao Paulo, nor was it to be held in conjunction with the 11th Pacific Science Congress, although Dr . RussF.LL assured the membership that the Society would cooperate to its fullest extent in both of these other undertakings . Work on the Society's own Symposium has been in progress since early in 1962 . It was not possible to hold this meeting in January of 1964, as originally planned, because of insufficient funds, but it now seems likely that the meeting will be held in April of 1966 . After considerable discussion it was voted to hold the Symposium in conjunction with the Federation meetings, and to co-sponsor the event with the Division of Comparative Physiology of the American Society of Zoologists . Dr. AHHOTT indicated that as Program Officer of the Division he had already received permission to investigate the possibility of such a Symposium. With the support of this 77
Society, and we trust several governmental agencies, it would appear that the meeting could beheld in Atlantic City rather than San Diego. Dr. RIIQaar-r- was to go to Washington the following day and discuss the various aspects ofthe planning with several ofthe granting agencies . A lively discussion on the journal Toxicon ensued . It was decided that the number of pages in each issue should be increased by 20, thus absorbing the backlog of papers that have been accepted during the past 2-4 months . Assurance was given that the publica tion of Toxicon would occur on a regular basis, four times a year . The editor related that the journal was the widest distributed journal on toxicology in the world, and that the number of subscriptions both in the United States and abroad was encouraging. However, it was noted that a number of the larger libraries do not yet subscribe to Toxicon, and it was suggested that the faculty members present encourage their libraries to obtain the journal. In the absence of Dr. Seuxnatts, Chairman of the Credentials Committee, Dr. P. RosgNasxa presented the applications for membership. Dr. G~N~tO suggested it might be nice to know the areas of interest of the various applicants . Dr. RoseNemta and Dr. RusssLr. then discussed the interests and accomplishments of the candidates. The application blanks as well as the reprints of the applicants were made available to those present. The members present unanimously approved the Credentials Committee report. Ballots on these applications will be sent to the regular members within the next several weeks. Dr. Bo HOt.MSr~r from the ICarolinska Institute and Dr. E. nom. Pozo of Mexico City were introduced and told the membership about the work they were doing at their respective institutions . Dr. HOLMS~r demonstrated a portable centrifuge, much to the interest of the members present. The meeting was then opened to the members for a short discussion on the progt~ess of their respective studies.
