Near-field effects in electronic scanning sonar Tucker, D. G. Journal of Sound and Vibration, Vol 8. No 3 (November 1968) pp 355-363 Theory and results on short-range detection, location and identification of targets is prcsented. It shows that in multiplicative signal processing the effective array beamwidth is half that obtained from the array used normally. The signal obtained is a direct current varying in amplitude according to the modulation on the acoustic signal and therefore represents the target information. The beam pattern is a variation of this DC amplitude for constant echo intensity. For experiments in air at 2OkHz, the receiving array was 90cm long giving a 1” far-field beamwidth, and a near field out to 54m. Beam response was measured with the source at 20n1, using a 30” scanning sector. Using two closely-spaced spherical targets at the same range, the experiment was repeated at 37kHz in water, with a receiver 1. 56m long. (1175)

Ultrasonic wave transmission devices Papadakis, E. P. US Patent 3,400,340 (3 September 19681 (Filed 4 August 1964) An ultrasonic delay line comprises the delay medium itself, an electromechanical input transducer to generate an ultrasonic wave and one or more output transducers. The delay medium consists of an elongated integral member, the first part of which has very low absorption properties and the second half has very good absorptive properties for acoustic energy. The middle phase is designed to produce a good impedance matching between the two extremes. The design minimises reflection of acoustic energy back into the first half of the delay time. (1172) Elastic dispersive delay lines Sittig, E. K. US Patent 3,400,341 (3 September 1968) (Filed 8 March 1966) A dispersive elastic wave delay line at one end of which is located a transducer for producing an elastic wave in a given direction, and for extracting reflected wave energy. Reactive discontinuities are disposed along the delay line to reflect portions of the input energy towards one end. They are arranged so that signal components of different frequencies are reflected from different discontinuities in the line. (1173) International standard is&ion in underwater sound measurements Tratt, W. J. Acustica, Vol 20, No 3, pp 169- 181 The paper is presented in conclusion of a round-robin programme, amongst nine participating nations, to calibrate hydrophones. It was hoped that the tests might result in a design of an internationally standardised hydrophone. Ten different types of hydrophone are described and relevant specifications are presented. The facilities, available for calibration, in each of the member corn-tries are reviewed. A discussion of calibration methods and techniques is concluded by
