FOUNDATION GROUP

OF THE OSLO/LONDON W PHOTOBIOLOGY

TheOslo/London UV Photobiology Group was established in November 1990. The founding members, in alphabetical order, are: Hilde Banrud, Kristian Berg, Gunnar Brunborg, Judith Kinley, Johan Moan, Wenche Olsen, Trine Platou, Chris Potten, Per Thune and Anthony Young. The Krst project, funded by a grant from the Association for International Cancer Research, will be a study of induced photoprotection from UVR induced epidermal DNA damage. This work wiII be based in Johan Moan’s laboratory, Department of Biophysics, Institute for Cancer Research, The Norwegian Radium Hospital, Oslo.

Ph.D. IN PHOTOBIOLOGY Norway

On November 24, 1990, Kristian Berg defended his Ph.D. thesis Cellular Uptake and Photosensitizing Effects of Porphyrins and Phthdomanines. Dr. Berg has been working in Dr. Moan’s photobiology group in Oslo with the cooperation of Professor Wmkehnan, Boston, MA and Dr. Bommer, Logan, UT. Dr. Berg has studied the photosensitizing effects of sulphonate ahuninhun phthalocyanines (AlPcS,) and tetraphenyl-porphines (TPPS,,) in cellular systems. One of his main iindings concerns the accumulation of cells in mitosis after PDT which may be due to PDT effects on microtubules. Dr. Berg has been given a stipend to proceed with his work in Oslo. On December 15, 1990, Serge Picaud successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Photosensibilisation de New-ones invivo par d&s Colarants et des pigments Naturals: Photoendocytose, Photoddg&&-escence, Photupe?m4abilisatie~ Photoablationat theunlversiti d’Aix-Marseille II. Four articles on the subject have been published in journals specializing in cell biology and neurosciences (Neurosci. L.&t., 95 (1988) 24-30; J. Neurosci. Meth., 33 (1990) 101-112; Cell Tissue Res., 257 (1989) 565-576; Bmin Res., 531 (1990) 117-126). Anyone interested in this work can contact Dr. S. Picaud at: Laboratoire de Neurobiologie, CNRS, LNB 3, 31 Chemin J. Aiguier, 13402 Marseille CBdex 9, France.
