The laboratory work (approximately 8 to 10 hours) Will consist of techniques for growth, isolation and manipulation of Trypanosomes Leishmania and Malaria parasites. New methods for cryopreservation of laboratory and field isolates of parasites. Cell cloning procedures. Techniques for tissue culturing of malaria, leishmania, and trypanosomes. Parasite cell fractionation and isolation and characterization of cellular sub-fractions. Introduction to assessment and quantitation o f immunosuppression in parasitized hosts. Introduction to methods for preparation and quantitation of antisera including immunofluorescent antibody techniques, radioimmunoassay, immunodiffusion, complement fixation measurement. Techniques for assessing cell mediated immunity. Daily lectures will cover the theoretical background to the techniques and laboratory work. The last day of the course will be devoted to discussions on the implementation of modern immunological and biochemical techniques under conditions where equipment and ressources are limited. Students.
The course is offered to 18 young investigators such as recently appointed university lecturers, post-doctoral students or advanced graduates students who are starting an academic career. The students will be drawn entirely from Africa with as broad an international representation as possible. No more than 7 will be from Kenya. Travel and fi~,ing
