Interplastic acquires Valspar gel-coat technology

TURKISH company METYX Composites has acquired all the assets of LEDA’s Mondavio, Italy, facility, as well as some of the assets of Advanced Composites Technology (ACT Group), also located in Mondavio, Italy.

SPECIALITY CHEMICALS company Interplastic Corp has announced the acquisition of three gel-coat technologies from The Valspar Corporation.

The LEDA facility in Mondavio was one of the leading kitting operations in Europe until the recession and was equipped with automated lines for foam and reinforcements kits. The LEDA machinery will complement METYX’s recent investment in a kitting centre in Manisa, Turkey, increasing its capacity and diversifying its product and service offerings. ACT Group, established in 1996, was among the first companies in Europe to use vacuum

infusion technology to produce large components. “We have had a long history of cooperation with both LEDA and ACT management,” explains Ugur Ustunel, Co-Director, METYX Composites. “Although we lament the economic factors that affected the marine industry in the region, we gladly welcomed the opportunity to bid on LEDA and ACT assets during the liquidation process so that we can expand on their groundbreaking work.” The new equipment is expected to be up and running at METYX’s Manisa facility in the autumn. Under terms of the agreement, Interplastic, headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, has acquired the following technologies from Valspar: • Blush Guard high performance gel-coats designed for the marine industry; • Conductive Primer Gel Coat, a primer designed to improve transfer efficiencies of electrostatically applied coatings; and • Quick Tint rapid response, locally dispensed, general purpose MACT compliant custom coloured gel-coats.

Interplastic’s acquisition is limited to the technologies, formulations and processing information and does not include any Valspar manufacturing facilities. Interplastic’s Thermoset Resins Division focuses on the production and distribution of unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester resins, gel-coats and colorants for the composites and cast polymer industries. Valspar, headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a leading coatings manufacturer, providing coatings and coating intermediates to a variety of industries.
