Introduction

Intraguild predation control From 1–6 October 2000, the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek Symposiun (7th European Workshop on Insect Parasitoids) was held in Haarlem, The Netherlands. At this symposium, the 100 participants discussed the biology of insect parasitoids in sections on the History of insect parasitism; Physiological and molecular bases of host–parasitoid interactions; Chemical ecology of foraging behaviour in multitrophic systems; Intraguild predation; Dispersal in parasitoid–host systems (evolution and consequences for dynamics and persistence of host–parasitoid interactions); Genetics and evolutionary biology; and Functional morphology and behaviour. Abstracts of all papers and posters were published in a symposium booklet, and an article appeared about the concurrent exhibition in the symposium building, where the history of the discovery of parasitoids in Europe was shown in the form of old European entomology books (1650–1880) (F. Pelt, 2000, ‘‘Small vermins: about the

least respected creatures among which parasites’’ (in Dutch). Teylers Magazijn, 68: 7–10). Based on the current strong interest in the topic of intraguild predation, the authors of the papers presented in that session were asked to prepare articles based on their presentations. A selection of these papers are presented in this volume of Biological Control. I thank Ian C.W. Hardy (guest editor) and Marshall W. Johnson (editor Biological Control) for editing this set of papers.
