the benign self limited nature of the process. The authors warn that this diagnosis is a clinical one and a diagnosis of exclusion. Should any doubt exist, surgical exploration to rule out incarcerated hernia or torsion of testis is mandatory.--William K. Sieber. BREAST CANCER IN A 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL. W. H. Lippitt, W. S. Medart and S. N. Ramsey. Surgery 68:395-399 (August), 1970. A 2-cm, in diameter mass in the left breast of a 10-year-old girl was discovered on routine examination. After biopsy total excision by simple mastectomy was necessary. Histologically, the t u m o r resembled ductal carcinoma. A 3-year follow-up without recurrence is noted.--William K. Sieber. HEAD

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIZE OF THE PALATINE TONSIL. N. Roydhouse. Aust. New Zeal. J. Surg. 40:26-29 (August), 1970. Five hundred and seventy-one pairs of tonsils weighed after removal from children aged from 2-12 years showed that estimation of the size was inaccurate in 50 per cent and had no clinical significance. There was n o relationship between the size of the tonsils to the n u m b e r of bouts of tonsillitis, postoperative health or histological appearance.--J. R. Solomon. STRIDOR IN A PAEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT. M. W. Arthurton. Proc. Roy. Soc. IVied. 63: 712-714, 1970. This paper is an analysis of 250 cases of stridor admitted to the pediatric wards between 1957 and 1969. Of these cases, two were due to vascular ring, one to cervical neuroblastoma, one to foreign body, two to hydrocephalus and two were associated with neurogenic swallowing dysfunction. The remainder were either nonspecific or due to inflammatory conditions.--John E. S. Scott.

THORAX CONGENITAL CLEFT STERNUM. A. Eugelaar and J. H. Biitel. T h o r a x 25:490-498 (July), 1970.

The treatment of an infant with this anomaly is described and the embryogenesis is discussed. Reports of 14 other operated cases are collected. The main indication for operation is cosmetic, but cardio-pulmonary symptoms attributed to instability of the thoracic cage have precipitated early operation in infancy. The two halves of the sternum are approximated by sutures after the costal cartilages have been divided obliquely. The operative mortality has been low but in two patients with associated cervico-facial angiomatosis, fatal hemorrhage occurred from angiomas in the upper trachea. Thirty-five references are quoted. --4. F. R. Bentley. HEMOMEDIASTINUM IN A HEMOPHILIAC AFTER MINOR TRAUMA. S. K. M. Jivani and J. R. Mann. Thorax 25:372-374 ( M a y ) , 1970. Minor chest trauma in an l l-year-old hemophiliac boy resulted in symptomatic expanding hemomediastinum which responded to treatment of the clotting defect.--William K. Sieber. INTRATHORACIC PHAEOCHROMOCYTOMA. A. D. McNeill, B. M. Groden and A. M. Neville. Brit. J. Surg. 57:457-461 (June), 1970. This is a review of 22 reported cases. A further case is described in a 52-year-old m a n who had a second phaeochromocytoma in ectopic adrenal tissue in the hilum of the left kidney. Three of the cases were in children, two boys aged 9 and 13 and a girl aged 8. In two of the cases the condition was familial. In the case of 8-year-old girl, whose tumor was discovered at autopsy, the mother had bilateral adrenal tumors and a sister had multiple phaeochromocytomas. The 9-year-old boy's m o t h e r had phaeochromocytoma of the right adrenal. In this review four out of 23 patients had multiple phaeochromocytomas. The general incidence of multiple tumors is said to be 4 per cent.---J. Lari. LATE RESULTS OF CONSERVATIVE SURGICAL PROCEDURES IN HYDATID DISEASE OF THE LUNG IN CmLDREN. E. Tsakayiannis, C. Pappis and G. Moussatas. Surgery 6 8 : 3 7 9 382 (August), 1970. This report from Athens, Greece, Aghea
