Introducing new series to Periop Briefing Kelly Putnam, Managing Editor

I

am pleased to introduce the new “At a Glance” series that will be featured in Periop Briefing. Developed in response to requests from readers, this series provides fundamental information for perioperative nursing practice in a condensed, visually engaging format to complement the traditional in-depth articles included in this section of the AORN Journal. The series will run every other month, covering both patient positioning and common procedures.

Procedures at a Glance

Responding to readers’ feedback

The “Procedures at a Glance” series will feature one procedure at a time, addressing • indications for the procedure, • positioning considerations, • prepping requirements, • basic procedural protocol, • instruments needed for each step, • anticipated problems, and • expected postoperative recovery course. I will collaborate with subject matter experts to provide these key elements for both general and specialty procedures ranging from laparoscopic cholecystectomy to craniotomy.

I want to thank the readers who participated in our recent focus groups and surveys—this feedback was instrumental in aligning our content initiatives with what our readers would like to see in the Journal. Many expressed an interest in articles that provide refreshers of content covered in the Periop 101 course in an easy-to-digest format—similar to that of the “Guidelines at a Glance” products included with the Guideline Essentials packages for updated AORN guidelines. Working with this template of bulleted information paired with key takeaways and images, Periop Briefing is expanding the “At a Glance” brand with this new ongoing series.

Positioning at a Glance The series begins in this issue with “Basic principles of patient positioning.” Every patient undergoing a surgical procedure is at risk for a positioningrelated injury, and perioperative RNs are key players in minimizing this risk.1 Nurses need to be able to identify the patient-specific risk factors and have a thorough understanding of the issues that contribute to positioning injuries. This article reviews the tenets of patient positioning, including the goals of positioning, roles of the perioperative RN, considerations for support surfaces and special populations, and required documentation related to the patient’s position throughout the procedure. In subsequent issues, this series will provide practical information for the basic patient positions (e.g., supine, prone, lithotomy, Trendelenburg).

Several nurses who participated in our focus groups indicated that they would appreciate an easy way to review procedures performed in specialties other than their own, noting the desire to be knowledgeable of a variety of procedures—even if they extend beyond the scope of their everyday practice. In addition, they also requested articles that feature more information on patient prepping and surgical instrumentation.

I believe this series will be an excellent addition to the Periop Briefing lineup. Nurses can use this collection of articles as an educational tool or a simple refresher, offering a resource for students, early-career RNs, and seasoned RNs alike. I hope you enjoy the new series and I would welcome any comments or suggestions that you may have—especially recommendations for topics to be covered in this series.
