APPIE report Introducing the activities of The Association of Powder Process Industry and Engineering, Japan The Association of Powder Process Industry and Engineering, Japan (APPIE) is a sister organization to the Society of Powder Technology, Japan (SPTJ). SPTJ was established in 1957 mainly for researchers working in powder technology and industry. On the other hand, APPIE was established for corporations concerned with the powder industry in Japan in 1971. At present, the number of corporate members is nearly 300 and the number of individual members is nearly 70. Individual members are persons nominated by the board of APPIE to contribute their specialty to the activity of APPIE. Corporate members are classied in four categories: more than half are manufacturers and marketers of powderprocessing machinery and equipment, nearly one-third are manufacturers of powder-related products, and the remainders are divided equally as manufacturers of instruments for powder and construction and engineering rms. APPIE and SPTJ both have their main ofce in Kyoto, and cooperate together in many areas. Activities of APPIE that relate to the public are: (i) holding POWTEX exhibitions in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, (ii) producing industrial standards related to powder technology and industry, and contributing ISO, JIS and APPIE standards, (iii) distributing test powders specied by JIS and APPIE standards, (iv) publishing technical documents on powder technology, (v) promoting lifetime education for engineers in the powder industry, and (vi) international relations. Among the various activities of the APPIE members, the most important are the technical groups. There are currently 19 technical groups: Bulk Handling, Comminution, Classication and Sieving, Drying, Dust Collection, Mixing and Forming, Granulation, Measurement and Control, Wet Process, Particulate Modication Technology,Transportation, Clean Technology, Fluidization, and Crystallization. These groups are concerned with unit operations in powder processing whereas the following groups are project-oriented: Battery Manufacturing Technology, Recycling and Reclamation, Electrophotographic Technology, Food Process Technology and Fine Powder Nano-technology. To enable mutual communication and technology transfer between members, APPIE holds a General Meeting, Seasonal Meetings in spring and autumn, and Regional Meetings in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka. More than 60 individuals gather at each occasion. Lectures, speeches and discussions with glasses in hand promote effective communication. In terms of periodicals, APPIE produces APPIE News and Powder Science & Engineering that are published monthly to members. Powder Science & Engineering is a technical magazine that is also sold openly to the public.
