Editorial

Introducing the Proceedings of the biennial meeting of the International Society for Ecological Economics This marks the inaugural volume to contain the Proceedings of the biennial meeting of the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE). The purpose of this volume is to highlight the important role that ISEE and its biennial and regional meetings play in shaping the research that defines the field of ecological economics. We plan to make the Proceedings a permanent addition to the journal. The 2004 meeting in Montreal is co-organized by Frank Mu¨ller of Concordia University and Jean-Pierre Revere´t of the Institute for Environmental Sciences of the Universite´ du Que´bec a` Montre´al. Their efforts are supported by a committee comprising Charles Perrings, University of York, York (Chair); Katrina Brown, University of East Anglia, Norwich; Kanchan Chopra, Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi; Tony Friend, Ottawa; John Gowdy, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York; Richard Norgaard, University of California, Berkeley; and Peter Victor, York University, Toronto. Supporting the Organizing Committee is a Scientific Committee of about 50 scholars from around the world, many of who sit on the Journal’s editorial board. The selection and review of papers for the Proceedings went as follows. There was a general call for papers and abstracts by the conference organizing committee. Papers and abstracts submitted by the deadline were sent to the Scientific Committee, whose members were asked to identify the best papers that should be considered for publication in the Proceedings. Scientific Committee members were

asked to provide substantive critical comments on those papers, just as a normal review would proceed for the Journal. The papers and reviews were forwarded to the Editorial office where they were reviewed by the Associate Editors and me. Papers selected for final publication were returned to the authors with reviewer comments for a final revision. Papers deemed meritorious by the Scientific Committee that did not make it into the Proceedings were encouraged to be submitted for publication in a regular issue of the Journal. I thank the meeting organizers for their careful and prompt oversight of this process, and to members of the Scientific Committee who supplied excellent and prompt peer review. Special thanks to Charles Perrings for his oversight of the selection process, and to Terri Perrier and the authors for a very quick completion of the review and resubmission process. I welcome your feedback on this important new edition to the Journal. With best regards,
