State Attorneys General and the Environment. By William Norman Thompson and Bradley Fraser Smith. The New Issues Press, Institute of Public Affairs, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. 1974. 92 pp. Price: $5.00 (Foreign $6.00). This is a useful account of the way in which the legal staff of local and central government may be involved in environmental issues. Unfortunately the scientific content is often inaccurate and sensational--if this is the way in which State Attorneys are briefed by the 'expert', the results are likely to be unfortunate.
Introduction to Environmental Science and Technology. By Gilbert M. Masters. John Wiley & Sons, New York, London, Sydney, Toronto. 1974. 404 pp. Price: £6.90. A text book, aimed at University undergraduates, on ecology, population dynamics, pollution and energy use and resources. It is clearly written and usually accurate, although the author tends to accept the more extreme 'doomwatch' point of view on occasion. Thus he quotes the computer predictions for D D T persistence in Limits to Growth, as though these were facts, ignoring the falls in DDT level which have already occurred in some of the most apparently endangered marine birds.
