This special issue of Computers & Industrial Engineering is inspired by the 16th Asia Pacific Industrial Engineering and Management Systems Conference (APIEMS 2015) held in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam on December 8-11, 2015. Sixteen papers are selected following a rigorous review process. These papers cover a range of key issues specific to recent advances in model development and algorithm design for the effective management of supply chain systems. We hope the readers will find this special issue informative and helpful in enabling them to understand the diversity and richness of problems encountered in the modeling, planning, and management of supply chain systems. The special issue can be divided into four parts. The first part consists of six papers. Four of these papers are dedicated to issues related to the design of various supply chain systems in different industries. The other two address emerging issues related to RFID adoption and carbon emissions in the context of supply chain network design. The next four papers making up the second part of the special issue tackle the development of algorithms specific to some critical issues in the components of supply chain systems. The third part of the special issue consists of three papers devoted to the scheduling problem, which is a fundamental and challenging problem in supply chain management. The next three papers in the last part of the special issue deal with topics related to the performance of supply chain systems. We would like to thank all the authors for their contributions to this special issue and a lengthy list of anonymous referees for their critical and helpful comments. Our sincere thanks go to Dr. Mohamed Dessouky, Editor-in-Chief of Computers & Industrial Engineering, for inviting us to guest edit this special issue, as well as the

editorial team at Elsevier for their constant and timely support in putting together this special issue.
