agonist that is an antagonist at the two other receptor subtypes? Or is the best potential drug one that is selective for p,-adrenoceptors? While this may sound like the best altemative, it has been reported that noradrenaline may first have to act on P,-adrenoceptors to promote development of brown adipose tissue before stimulating P,-adrenoceptors expressed on this tissue. One issue that is inadequately discussed in this book concerns the numerous reports, most of them prior to cloning of the genes, of the

presence of atypical P-adrenoceptors in tissues other than fat, e.g. muscle, heart, brain. While a number of these findings may be explained by the presence of adipocytes in the locations studied, others remain unexplained, especially where the very sensitive polymerase chain reaction, RNAse protection, or in situ hybridization failed to detect any p,-adrenoceptor message (as is the case in various parts of the brain). Few, if any, investigators still retain the possibility of the existence of yet another P-adlrenoceptor subtype (h- or

p,-adrenoceptor?) but a discussion of these apparent discrepancies would have been welcomed. In this book Goldberg and Frishman have provided an overview of P,-adrenoceptor agonism; however, for the reasons mentioned above, they may have missed the opportunity of writing the definitive book on p,-adrenoceptor agonism.

Pharmacological and Chemical Synonyms (10th edition)

names used for drugs, pesticides and other chemicals (such as vitamins) that are of pharmacological or biochemical significance. The alphabetical listing (using American spelling) provides main headings consisting of non-proprietary names followed by chemical names, pharmacological names, abbreviated chemical names, trivial names, salt names, research codes and proprietary (trade) names. There is careful cross referencing for proprietary names of established drugs.

Introduction to Toxicology (2nd edn) by John A. Timbrell, Taylor & Francis, 1995. E13.95 (xiii + 167 pages) ISBN 0 7484 0241 1 This second edition, published seven years after the original text, is not a major overhaul of the book but a simple update revision. New details have been added to examples used in the first edition and some completely new examples have been included. There are 11 chapters, the first of which is a general introduction (the historical aspects of toxicology and types of toxic substance and exposure). The other chapters cover a wide range of subjects including disposition of toxic compounds, types of toxic exposure and response, drugs as toxic substances, industrial chemicals, food additives and contaminants, toxic natural products, and toxicity testing. Unlike the original text, each chapter concludes with several questions addressing topics that have been discussed in that particular chapter but specimen answers are not included. The bibliography has been extensively revised and the book contains a glossary of toxicological terms. The book is an introductory text for beginners in the field of toxicology rather than an encyclopaedic toxicology text for the specialist.
