Corrosion characteristics of Cu and 90Cu-10Ni alloy in both media and of 70Cu-30Ni alloy in 0.5M NaC1 were similar based on the Tafel extrapolation procedure (and for Cu, the linear polarization method as well). Mechanisms responsible for vari-

Twenty crude oils from 10 wells in a North Sea oil field were correlated by multivariate analysis of gas chromatographic parameters. The whole oil chromatograms showed distinct differences between oils from different formations due to differences in biodegradation; however, they were insufficient for a complete classification. That was achieved by the chromatograms of the aromatic fraction, among which the biphenyls were best suited for classification. Explor. and Prod. Lab., P.O. Box 300, 4001 Stavanger, Norway.

Twenty-five hydrophone arrays and new methods for processing and inverting have shown their effectiveness in determining crustal structure 'under the constraints of the Arctic ice pack.' The Fram 2 and Fram 4 experiments and methods are described here. One series of lines was shot in the Polar

Abyssal Plain (Fram Basin), the other in the Nansen Basin, thus flanking the Nansen Ridge Spreading Center. Dept. of Earth, Atmos., and Planet. Sci., MIT, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA. Sediment with the largest harmonic amplitudes was also that with the longest residence time within the cascadograph; that is, it takes longer for more irregularly shaped particles to pass a sieve than more equant and smooth particles. Thus, sieve analysis results are a function of the sample shape distribution as well as size distribution. The cascadograph is a successful and relatively simple shape analysis tool and its results correlate with those of Fourier methods. Dept. of Geol. and Planet. Sci., Univ. of Pittsburgh, PA 12560, USA.
