Mehmisn~ of Cavitation and its Dependence on tbe Corrosion Resistance ofMetals. M. G. Timerbulatov, Sooiet Mater. Sci., 5 (1)

Electrochemical Corrosion of Internal Combustion EagineS A. M. Antipenko et al., Russian Eng. J. 50 (9)

(1969) 3639; 3 figs., 7 refs. (Transl. by Consultants Bureau of Fiz.-Khim. Mekhan. Mater., 5 (1) (1969) 50-54.) The role of high frequency pulses associated with liquid microvolumes breaking away from a solid surface and the part played by corrosion in erosion damage of metals were studied. A reduction in the intensity of cavitation is associated with a substantial increase in the corrosion resistance of metals.

(1970) 15-16; 3 refs. (Transl. by P.E.R.A. of Gt. Britain of Vestn.

Investigation of Cast Alloys of tbe System Cr-C&B Resistant to Abrasive Wear and Corrosion in Aggressive Media. A. V. Smimov and N. A. Syroegina, Soviet Mater. Sci., 5 (1) (1969) 39-42; 1 fig., 2 tables, 6 refs. (Transl. by Consultants Bureau of Fiz.-Khim. Mekhan. Mater., 5 (1) (1969) 54-57.) Test results on abrasion and corrosion resistant alloys in the chromium corner of the Cr-Co-B system are reported. The high abrasion resistance is due to the pressure of 60% chromium boride in a near eutectic composition and the line dendritic structure. The wear resistance is twice that of stellite. Nitriding is an effective method of increasing the wear resistance of titanium alloys but it results in a 2-3 fold reduction in fatigue strength. Investigation of Wear Resistance and Antifriction Pyopertiea of Hard-anodhd Alloy V95-T under Dry Friction Conditions. Yu. P. Dyachenko et al., Soviet Mater. Sci., 5

(1) (1969) 8&82; 3 figs., 5 refs. (Transl. by Consultants Bureau of Fiz.-Khim. Mekhan. Mater., 5 (1) (1969) 105-107.) A study of the wear resistance and antifriction properties of thick anodised films infiltrated by various techniques and the elucidation of the failure mechanism during the friction and wear process. When thick anodised films are infiltrated with colloidal graphite, graphite becomes liberated during the wear process to improve the friction and wear properties. Wear, 21 (1972)

Mashinostr., 50 (9) (1970) 15-16.)

Electrochemical corrosion of cylinder and piston components is severe with intermittent engine operation. Loss of metal during shut down is comparable with wear during operation. Corrosive wear can be prevented by the addition of a corrosion inhibitor to the engine oil. Low Temperature Wear of Tractor Transmissions. Yu. S. Bugakov, Russian Eng. J., 50 (9) (1970) 3840; 2figs.,4refs. (Transl. by P.E.R.A. of Gt. Britain of Vesm. Mashinostr., 50 (9) (1970) 32-34.)

An experimental procedure is described for studying the influence of low oil temperature on the wear and power losses of gear assemblies. A tractor transmission gearing is used as an example. As the ambient air temperature is reduced below freezing point, power losses in this assembly increase and gear wear increases. Gouging Abrasion Test for Materials Used iu Ore and Rock Crushing: Part II. Effect of Metahrgical Variables on Gouging Wear. F. Borik and W. G. Scholz, J. Mater., 6 (3) (1971) 590-605; 4 figs., 3 tables, 8 refs.

The effect of metallurgical variables on gouging wear resistance was investigated using a jaw crusher. The variables investigated included microstructure, hardness, composition and the carbon content. The materials tested were stainless steel, maraging steel, low-alloy steel, austenitic manganese steel, precipitation hardening manganese steels and white iron. In general martensite in the microstructure and high-carbon content favoured high-gouging abrasion resistance. The Analysis of Mechanical Variables Influencing Fretting Corrosion in Grease Lubricated I.&rings. J. B. Christian and B. D. McConnell, Lubrication Eng., 27 (10) (1971) 342-349; 6 figs., 7 tables, 3

refs. Three different greases were investigated in oscillating bearings under varying conditions of speed, load and angle of oscillation to determine the effect of the variables on the anti-fretting ability of the greases and to determine if there was a relationship between anti-wear and antifretting characteristics. The ability to inhibit fretting was adversely affected when the variables were collectively increased. Load appeared to have
