RO m a c h i n e s i m p r o v e p u t t y in electronics manufacture Two electronic c o m p o n e n t m a n u f a c t u r e r s have upgraded their water purification s y s t e m s to meet higher quality a n d p r o d u c t i o n requirements by installing the new OSMO 38R RO m a c h i n e from Osmonics. Ion exchange systems u s e d b y the m a n u f a c t u r e r s were not meeting purity requirements a n d production was restricted by short r u n times of the ion exchangers, says Osmonics. An OSMO 38R RO m a c h i n e was installed at each facility to reduce the dissolved solids load on the ion exchangers, thereby improving ion exchange effluent quality a n d extending r u n times, The RO m a c h i n e s also remove over 90% of the silica a n d TOC from the incoming feedwater at each facility. This new llne of m a c h i n e s is designed for large volume water purification applications where the greatest value is achieved with a modest investment. Machine design features include stage-by-stage low-pressure m e m b r a n e cleaning plus a compact control cabinet with several isolatable alarms. The OSMO m a c h i n e s are available with capacities from 17 000 gallons per day (63 mS/d) to 245 000 gpd (927 mS/d, with either CA or PA m e m b r a n e s . ii

Ionics nounces c o m p l e t i o n of acquisition Ionics Inc a n n o u n c e d the completion of its acquisition of the b u s i n e s s a n d assets of Resources Conservation Co [RCC) at the end of J a n u a r y . Commenting on the acquisition, Arthur L. Goldstein, Ionics c h a i r m a n a n d CEO, said, "We welcome RCC a n d its capabilities into the Ionics family of companies. This acquisition strengthens both Ionics a n d RCC's technical capabilities and marketing abilities in wastewater treatment a n d minimization." Nitrogen generating m e m b r a n e plant for Middle East Generon Systems h a s built a n d shipped a non-cryogenic nitrogen generating m e m b r a n e plant for a n MTBE Complex in the Middle East. The system will supply 30 000 s t a n d a r d cubic feet per h o u r of nitrogen at 99.5% purity for the m a n u f a c t u r e of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). MTBE is added to gasoline to e n h a n c e octane values a n d to reduce toxic emissions. Nitrogen will be used in the plant to seal the main process valves and to blanket chemical t a n k s a n d reactors. This plant h a s a m o d u l a r design, b u t t in four separate units for flexibility. It features c o n t i n u o u s purity control and dual filtration of feed air for quality control and lower maintenance. In this configuration the plant c a n supply u p to 39 000 scfh at 99.5% purity, or, portions c a n be closed off for less supply w h e n activity is slowed, lowering operating co~ts.
