Positice Ions, by J. L. FRANKLIN, J_ G. DILLARD, H. M. ROSENSTOCK, J. T. HERRON, K. DRUL AND F. H. FIELD, NatI. Stand. Ref. Ser., Nat!. Bur. Stand. (U.S.), Document No. 26, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C., 1969, 289 pages, price $ 4.00. The monumental task of-assembling an up-to-date compilation of appearance potentiai and ionic heat of formation data has been carried out in splendid fashion by the six authors of this recent publication from the OffIce of Standard Reference Data, NBS, Washington. The coverage is from 1955, at which date it takes over from the compiiation in Fie!d and Franklin’s well-known book, up to June 30, 1966. Nearly all the values of ionization and appearance potentials for positive ions reported in this period are included, whether obtained by electron or photon impact, photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, charge exchange, or theoretical calculation. The data vary widely in reliability, as discussed in the short but adequate introduction which summarizes the experimental methods and gives a genera1 order of preference. Wherever possible, the appearance potential data have been used to calculate a corresponding ionic heat of formation_ “Best” values are indicated by asterisk, and here the wide experience and good judgement of the authors are invaluable. An auxiliary table lists heats of formation of gaseous neutral species derived from the appearance potential data. The bibliography is well arranged azd easy to use. Two Appendices give the heats of formation of neutra! species used in the computations, and a table of group equivalent values. This excellent reference collection is a necessity for anyone concerned with gaseous ions: not only as a source of well-established thermochemical data, brat as a guide to areas in which the data are confiicting, obsolete, or non-existent. There are a few typographical omissions and one might ask for more recent values for AH, of neutral radicals but on the whole it is a terrific piece of work and an enormous time saver. The book is available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. for the very modest sum of S 4.00. F. P.
