IOTADERMA #178 If you encountered a young (especially female) patient with cold numb hands (perniosis), finger pulp atrophy, and peculiar ‘‘parrot beaked clawing’’ of a number of fingernails, to what disease condition should you be alerted? Robert I. Rudolph, MD, FACP Answer will appear in the December 2008 issue of the Journal.
OCTOBER IOTADERMA (#177) What do taches bleues, taches noires, macula caerulea, erythema chronicum migrans, and ‘‘breakfast, lunch, and dinner’’ all have in common (other than being truly wonderful sounding)? Answer: They are all caused by arthropod bites: the first and third are synonymous and are caused by either lice or fleas. The last is used to describe the distinctive pattern of bed bug assaults, and the remaining two are tick bite reaction patterns. They range in color, of course, from blue to black to red. They each have lovely names. REFERENCES Bernhard JD. Dermatologic(al) sesquipedalianism. J Am Acad Dermatol 1999;40:627-30.
