sion and thus polynomials of varying degrees or orders were used to calculate values of Y as a continuous function of W and N. Tables and graphs in two- or three-dimensional space of predicted yields are derived, where substitution between W and N can be shown. The weak point of the b o o k is that choosing the most appropriate structure for quantifying yield--water--fertilizer relationships is very uncertain, a trialand-error process. One can postulate new forms of yield response functions, not only polynomials and exponential, equations, given in the book. Functions of a rectangular hyperbola (Michaelis--Menten relation) and a non-rectangular hyperbola (Visser relation) should be mentioned also. The production functions of Hexem and Heady quantifying yield--water-nitrogen relationships are to some u n k n o w n degree site specific and, therefore, n o t necessarily applicable to other locations. Without transferability among countries and world regions, site-specific research must be carried o u t in each country or each region of it that differs with respect to soil and climatic variables. IRRIGATION BOOK LIST

Irrigation Book List. International Irrigation Information Center, Bet Dagan, Israel. 60 pp., 335 entries in 16 languages, US$ 3.00, ISBN 92-9019-003-9. For the first time, an international listing of books on the subject of irrigation is available. This b o o k l e t is the result of efforts by the staff of the International Irrigation Information Center (IIIC), a non-profit corporation supported by the State of Israel and the International Development Research Centre, Canada. Shortly after the establishment of the International Irrigation Information Center in 1975, the participants of the 7th International Irrigation Course at the Volcani Agricultural Research Center in Israel were asked what types of information they would like the new organization to provide. The overwhelming response was for lists o f books and journals for small libraries in developing countries. Investigation revealed that adequate lists did n o t exist and that information a b o u t publications in languages other than English was not readily available. This publication is largely limited to books printed since 1960, though a few from before that date are included. Subjects directly related to irrigation are covered, as well as material on supporting fields such as plant stress physiology, agrometeorology and soil science. Broader topics, such as irrigation economics and policy, are also included.

Although a thorough search was conducted, the staff at IIIC does n o t consider the list exhaustive. Books of purely local interest, or containing only short chapters on irrigation, were generally excluded. The publication is divided into three sections: List 1: Includes textbooks, handbooks and other books mainly from publishing houses. List 2: Includes b o o k s of regional interest, publications of research institutions, booklets, bulletins, etc. List 3: Includes bibliographies and dictionaries. The material cited in this Irrigation Book List has n o t been classified on a scientific basis since the compilers did n o t have access to all the books which are listed. However, by searching libraries in Israel, The Netherlands, France and Italy (FAO), the staff of IIIC have done a good j o b of making this publication truly international. This listing of irrigation books has benefited from the primary efforts of IIIC, which is the preparation of the quarterly abstract journal, "IRRICAB, Current Annotated Bibliography of Irrigation". As a consequence, IIIC is becoming the primary depository of irrigation publication from around the globe. This publication has been needed for a long time. For those persons engaged professionally in the field of irrigation, it would be a useful service to carefully review this b o o k list and forward any other k n o w n references to IIIC. In this way, this listing can be expanded at some future date. Any forthcoming publications on irrigation should be forwarded to this center. The Irrigation Book List is available from the International Irrigation Information Center at either POB 49, Bet Dagan, Israel or POB 8500, Ottawa, Canada K I G 3H9. G.V. SKOGERBOE
