ISMM’96 International Symposium on Mathematical Morphology Application to Image and Signal Processing III 11-13 May 1996, Atlanta,
International Society for Mathematical Morphology Co-operating organizations: European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) IEEE Signal Processing Society The International Symposium on Mathematical Morphology and its Applications to Image and Signal Processing (ISMM’96) will be held during 11-13 May 1996, in Atlanta. It is the third in the series of meetings of the International Society for Mathematical Morphology. It is intended as a forum to present important research results on the latest theoretical or practical developments in mathematical morphology and its applications. The exact time has been selected so that the symposium takes place between two other major conferences, ICASSP’96 (7-10 May) and ISCASP6 (12-15 May), which are also held in Atlanta in 1996. During May 1996 there will also be several international events in Atlanta related to the 1996 Olympic Games. Interested authors are invited to submit a summary of a paper to be presented at ISMM’96 and appear in its proceedings. The contents of the paper should be in any of the theoretical (deterministic or Elsevier Science B.V.

IWMIC-96 Workshop on Medical Image Compression 21-23 May 1996, CEFRIEL,
Who? The Research and Education Center for Information Engineering - EFRIEL (represented by R. Lancini) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne - EPFL (represented by M. Kunt) are jointly organizing the First International Workshop on Medical Image Compression under the sponsorship of EURASIP, The European Association for Signal Processing. Why? The purpose of this workshop is to provide an international forum for the discussion of most

advanced medical image compression techniques applicable to various imaging modalities in all areas of medicine, as well as curently available methods and standards in specific applications. Emphasis will also be put on real implementations and clinical experience. A special debate will focus on existing data on clinical acceptability and image quality control after compression based on large scale multicentric experiments. Last but not least, the impacts of recent trends in the computer and multimedia industry and that of hardware & software developments on medical imaging and medical image communication will be debated.

Where?
The workshop will be held from 21 to 23 May 1996 in Milano, Italy, at CEFRIEL premises. There will be oral presentations, posters and round tables without parallel sessions. How? Authors are invited to submit the summary of their paper to be presented at IWMIC-96 to the General Chair. The paper should address theoretical aspects, algorithms, implementation and complexity issues, as well as applications and assessments of medical image compression methods for storage and transmission including clinical experience. Submissions will be assessed by the members of the Technical Committee. Acceptance of papers will be based on their technical merit, novelty and clarity.

Paper submission
Submit a two-page abstract and summary, including figures, typed on A4-size white paper. The abstract and summary should contain enough detail to clearly convey the approach and the results of the research. Five copies of abstract and summary are to be accompanied by a covering letter, stating the author’s name, affiliation, complete mailing address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address. The abstract and summary must be received by 2 October 1995. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection of their papers by 13 November 1995. A possible revised abstract and summary must be received by 31 December 1995.
Authors of exceptionally high quality and comprehensive papers will be asked to submit an extended paper (lo-15 pages) in a camera-ready form to be included in a book that R. Lancini will edit. These invited papers not exceeding 15 pages must be received by 5 February 1996 at the latest.
