ISPIM NEWS NEW PRESIDENT

A successor to Professor Knut Holt as President of ISPIM was elected in August for a two year term of office; he is Dr Vilkko Virkkala, who is Vice President for R&D at the KONE Corporation. Dr Virkkala’s address is: Head Office KONE Corporation Corporate Research and Development Department PO Box 8 SF - 00331 HELSINKI Finland Tel: (9)-O-4751 ISPIM CONFERENCE

The 1985 ISPIM Conference on Innovation Management, held at Innsbruck, Austria, 26-28 August, was a considerable success, and it attracted some 180 participants. A broad range of issues related to innovation management was covered at the conference and it is hoped that a number of key papers will be published in future issues of Technovation. It is intended that the 1987 conference will be held in the UK. ISPIM MEMBERSHIP

Some 30 new ISPIM members were gained during the Innsbruck conference. In addition it was announced that there is a new Danish national ISPIM group with some 200 members and a somewhat similar NAIB Japan society. It appears that national ISPIM societies will soon be established in Austria, Finland and Norway. Technouation readers are reminded that individual membership of ISPIM costs only $20 per year and institutional membership $100 per year. Membership brings with it subscription to Technovation at the favourable rates of $36 per year for personal members and $48 per year for institutional members. COMPUTER

TELECONFERENCING

Given that all the Board Members of ISPIM are extremely busy people, which makes it difficult for them to play as active a role as they would like in the affairs of ISPIM, our new President has suggested the need to experiment with computer teleconferencing. This would, he suggests, go a long way towards overcoming the associated problems of distance and time involved in attending Board meetings. Dr Virkkala outlined his ideas in a five page paper on the innovation of a communication process for ISPIM, presented to a small group of members and board members at Innsbruck. The paper discusses three basic ideas: l The introduction of computer teleconferencing into ISPIM work. l The progressive expansion of the teleconferencing principle to improve the efficiency of written and oral presentations. l The utilisation of new microcomputer printing possibilities. If ISPIM can introduce new innovations into the communication process, the benefit to members would be twofold: l The more efficient performance of ISPIM’s main tasks. l The adoption, by members, of improved communication methods for use in their own work environments. The outcome of the deliberations and experiments in the use of teleconferencing will be reported in future issues of Technouation, and ISPIM members and ‘Technouation readers are cordially invited to report their own experiences of this new mode of communication.
