Medicine and Law

The purpose of this international documentation centre, which has recently jeen set up at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the University of Freiburg, Germally, is to collect source materials, scientific literature and data for the study of the historic interrelationships of society, medicine and law. It is the aim of the Centre to make this material as accessible as possible to all those interested in further research. The source materials of the different cultures and periods is today sometimes difficult to obtain, arcane and sometimes uncomprehensible because of language barriers. Sources, literature and bibliography will therefore be reproduced on microfilm, thus making the -tnaterial readily accessible to physicians, historians, criminologists and sociologists as well as scholars in law, psychology and other related fields. Translations of the most important passages will be made into English and French. The Executive Committee of the Centre comprises Professors B. Forster, E. Seidler and H. Thieme of the University of Freiburg, and Professor H. Karplus of Jaffa, Israel. The Secretary is Dr. P. Volk. The Centre Cslocated at Albertstrasse 9, D-78 Freiburg i. Br., Germany. The American

for Medicine and Law has now been established

for over a year and has a

xxii distinguished membership of over 350 specialists, professors, deans of faculties, judges and professional people. The presidium has been selected in such a way as to give the society the widest possible contact with all government and national institutions having influence on the law making process. Ten working groups have undertaken work in the areas: Agreement to medical treatment; Medical secrecy; Drugs and medication; Mental illnesses, legal responsibility, the responsibility and damages; Professional illnesses; Transplantation; Criteria for administrating medical care; Agreement for surgery after death; Artificial insemination; and Medical and legal aspects of anti-society youth behaviour. Seminars and symposia are held quarterly and each year a national convention will feature one of the major subjects covered by the working groups. It is hoped that new members would be interested to join the Society in view of the fact that Israel as a major immigration center in the world is facing medical and legal problems which until now have not yet found their proper solution and new members may find an inspiration and guidance in the experience of the Society.
