Issue in honour of Professor L.L.M. van Deenen This summer Professor van Deenen celebrated his 65th birthday and retired from active academia. Next to this he also expressed his wish to resign as Managing Editor of Biochimica et Biophysics Acta on October lst, 1993, after having served the journal with great dedication for over thirty years. Professor van Deenen became a member of the BBA Advisory Board in the beginning of 1962 and accepted the function of Managing Editor in August 1964. At that time volume 88 of BBA was being produced! In September 1983 Professor van Deenen succeeded Professor Slater as Chairman of the Board of Managing Editors for a period that lasted till the end of 1989. His eminent contributions to biochemistry in general and the development of BBA in particular are acknowledged by dedicating the present issue of BBA to him. The first paper of Professor van Deenen in BBA appeared in volume 43 in 1960 and was entitled “Metabolism and functions of phosphatides. Specific fatty acid composition of red blood cell membranes”. Apart from a small change in nomenclature, indeed, a highly characteristic set of keywords could be abstracted from this early title to indicate the disciplines of biochemistry that were closest to his heart in both his scientific career and in the development of BBA to its present status. Therefore, it seemed most appropriate to dedicate an issue of the Lipids and Lipid Metabolism section to him to pay tribute to his contributions. The articles appearing in this issue were subjected to the regular BBA evaluation procedures. The authors have not been specifically invited to contribute. In this respect the present issue can be considered as a present day example of what happens in the field. We hope that Professor van Deenen will enjoy reading this issue, and many more issues to come, as much as our general readership. We are happy that he will continue to edit reviews in the field of lipids and biomembranes for BBA, and remain with us as an Honorary Managing Editor. The Managing Editors BBA
