Flame retardants to the fore Plastics Additives & Compounding reports on some of latest developments in flame retardancy at a number of companies.
Italmatch introduces new phosphorus-based flame retardants Italmatch Chemicals has introduced a new family of fully colourable flame retardants - Phoslite® - for use in engineering polymers, in particular in polyamide (PA), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polycarbonate (PC) and PC alloys as well as for polypropylene (PP).
In particular, the company says that it has started to market Phoslite B631C, a proprietary synergistic flame retardant system based on phosphorus and bromine for use in polyolefins. According to Italmatch, Phoslite B631C additive flame retardant is an effective solution for flameproofing UL 94 V-2 polyolefins (PP

homo- and co-polymer, TPO and HDPE), as well as talc- and glass-filled compounds. The dosage range is 1-2.5%, with the bromine percentage in the final article being 0.1-0.2%. Phoslite IP-C is a proprietary inorganic phosphorus-based, halogen-free flame retardant that is able to provide a very effective solution for flameproofing PC and PC/ABS with or without reinforcement. The additive is also effective in recycled PC. The company adds that other additives are under development that exploit the high potential of this range, in particular products like Phoslite IP-A and Phoslite IP-G, their mixtures and their synergistic characteristics with nitrogenbased additives. These preparations are expected to be especially suitable for flame proofing glass fibre reinforced polyamides (in particular PA66, PA6 and their copolymers). These materials are intended to be used in the electrical and electronic sectors, for GWIT compliance, as well as glass fibre reinforced PBT and PC-PC/ ABS alloys. Italmatch Chemicals is also the supplier of Red-P (Masteret®) intended to be used as halogen-free flame retardant in many polymers, but particularly for glass-fibre reinforced PA66, as well as of melamine derivative flame retardants - Melagard®.
