Ivan PEYCHES (1906-1978) Ivan Peyches was born 2 February 1906 in Libourne, France. After completing his studies at the Faculties of Science in Bordeaux and Strasbourg (Agr6g~ in Physics) he prepared his doctoral Thesis at the Sorbonne, Paris, in the Laboratory of Professor Darmois. Dr. Peyches joined the Cie Saint Gobian in 1937 as Chief of the Electrothermal Research Laboratory. From 1 January 1944 to 31 December 1969 he was Director of Research of Saint Gobain Glass Works, and subsequently Director of Research attached to the President of Saint Gobain-Pont-/t-Mousson. He retired 31 December 1970, but remained an Honorary Scientific Director of the Cie Saint GobainPont-~-Mousson. Dr. Peyches was the author of numerous scientific works on electrolytes and the structure of glass (awarded by the American Ceramic Society). His contributions in the field of technology include the TEL process for glass fibering and the JUSANT process for the continuous polishing on4ine of glass. After his retirement he remained extremely active in the field of organisation of industrial research and the applications of solar energy. In May 1969 he was elected to the French Academy of Science. In 1974 he became President of the Society of French Civil Engineers. He was the Founder President of the National Association of French Doctors of Science (ANDES) and a Fellow of the Society of Glass Technology. He received a decoration as an Officer of the IAgion d'Honneut. Since its creation in 1968 he was a Member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids.
