Vacuum Engineering at the Leipzig Spring Fair 1967 (The VACUUM News Editor would like to express his gratitude to Dr H Junge of E Leybold’s Nachfolger, Cologne, jbr preparing this report).
This year’s Leipzig Spring Fair, which is East Germany’s largest annual exhibition of technology, was held in Leipzig from 5th to 14th March. The Fair gives an opportunity to the East German Vacuum Industry to exhibit a representative crosssection of its products. In addition, many other firms from both East and West Europe exhibited their new products at the Fair. Moreover, two Japanese Vacuum Firms were also represented in Leipzig. Visitors were thus able to gain valuable information and to compare products from different parts of the world. It is difficult to analyse the market in the field of vacuum engineering products. Economy and trade are dependent to a great extent upon the political situation, so it is hardly possible to make a fair comparison between the price of an East European product and that of a product made in Western Europe. This is particularly difficult in East Germany where the industrial price reform affects prices. Thus, the East German stands were not really able to furnish specific information as to prices or terms of delivery for the majority of their products. Great Britain AEI Limited, Scientific Apparatus Department, Manchester exhibited their new
Triode Ion Pumps P 8 and P 25 with their pump housing. The pumps, with pump speed for air of 8 and 25 l/s respectively, are distinguished by their wide range (lo-* to lo-” torr) as well as by their high argon stability (30 per cent of the pump speed for air). The Sorption Pump SP3 (1.2 kg molecular sieve filling) is capable of evacuating a vacuum system of 60 litres in 10 minutes to a pressure of under lo-’ torr. The Foreline Trap FT2 can be used to produce an oil-free forevacuum when an oil sealed rotary vacuum pump is

held in East Europe the period of delivery quoted, particularly in the case of new products, sometimes amounts to two years or more. This fact also makes true comparisons between similar firms in East and West Europe extremely difficult. In general, the technical quality of the equipment exhibited was excellent. With a few exceptions, it was generally acknowledged that the quality of products in the East European market compared very favourably with West European products. The presentation of catalogues and prospectus literature from almost all the East European vacuum firms left little to be desired. However, variations in the quality of machining of different products from one and the same firm make a review more difficult. An exception, however, was the firm VEB Carl Zeiss of Jena, whose information literature was outstanding for its clarity. The following firms exhibited products :

employed. Oil-free vacua are particularly important for UHV systems. In the field of vacuum gauges, AEI showed a Thermocouple Gauge Control VC 12 (with a measurement range of 5 torr to 1O-4 torr) and also their Wide Ion gauge control VC 20 (with a range of 0.25 to 10-l’ torr). The emission current of the ion gauge is adjustable between 5 PA and 10 mA. The readings are taken from a decadic and logarithmic indicator. The 180” mass spectrometer Type MS 10 completed the programme of exhibits. Diffraction is effected by a permanent magnet (radius 5 cm). With a total measurement range up to M= 150, adjacent measurements up to M= 150 can be clearly indicated. The majority of gases are detectable to a partial pressure of 5 X lo-” torr. The vacuum system is equipped with a 160 l/s sputter ion pump ULVAC, Model Ulv Ion PST 8 and is capable of producing a pressure of below lo-” torr. Various UHV valves, Model VUH 100 as well as sorption pumps (500 g molecular sieve filling 5 A) and an oilsealed forevacuum pump (0.36 m3/h) are incorporated in addition to the necessary vacuum gauges.
