Japanese Cl Chemistry Pro,ject A report in the Japanese Ecomomic Journal (23 (1985), No. 1173, Aug. 20th. p.13) describes some of the progress which has been made in this series of projects carried out by the Reseach and Development Association for C, Chemicals with assistance (to the tde of 9.6 billion yen from 1980 to 1985) from the Ministry. of International Trade and Industry . All four groups associated with the project are reported to have reached their targets. For example, "in production of ethylene glycol (from CO and H2) using rhodium and phosphine as catalysts, the effective use of carbon

monoxide was rated at 72% higher than the 60% goal". "Rhodium, ruthenium and cobal.tcatalysts for ethanol production" were also reported to have reached their favourable results goals and were achieved with rhodium and zeolite catalysts for the production of acetic acid and hydrocarbons. Despite the research progress, it is reported that the association is likely to have a funding problem due to the zero-growth Japanese Government's budgetting policy; this will mean that funding will probably be cut from about two billion yen per year to Less than one billion yen per year from the fiscal year 1986 onwards. Four firms, including Sumitoma Chemical Company and Mitsubishi Chemical Industries, form the ethylene glycol six group of _the association while firma, led by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company and Toyo Soda Manufacturing Company, are working on the ethanol project. Acetic acid research is carried out by Daicel Chemical Industries while four other firms, including Ube Industries and Idemitsu Petrochemical Company are trying to develop hydrocarbon knowhow jointly with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry's National Chemical Laboratories. Seventh International Zeolite Conference The Second Circular for this conference, to be held in Tokyo in August 1986 (see Calendar), has just been published, This includes a call for papers, details of a field trip and optional tours as well as details of a Post-Conference Catalysis Symposi.umto be held in Kyoto from 24th to 26th August. This symposium will be informal, emphasising discussion which will be stimulated by a series of lectures and short communications; it is intended also to provide an opportunity to discuss specific news in the field of catalysis concerned with zeolites gathered at the Tokyo meeting and to exchange views and ideas on zeolite chemistry. A call is also made fox nominations for the D.W. Breck Award for the most significant contribution to molecular sieve zeolite science and technology made between January 1983 and December 1985: this will be presented at the Tokyo conference. Nominations should be sent to D. Barthomeuf, Laboratoire de Reactivite de Surface et Structure, Universite Paris VI. 75230 Paris Cedex
