Deep-Sea Res., 34(2A):213-220. Concentrations of cadmium and lead in muscle tissue of Atlantic fish were not significantly different from those of Pacific fish. Differences in copper concentrations in the two groups may be related to size difference. Higher concentrations of nickel, cobalt, iron and manganese observed in muscle tissue from the Pacific fish may be due to differences in fish size and differences in deep water metal chemistry between the two oceans. Although both freshwater aquaculture and mariculture are practiced in Japan, the latter accounts for almost the entire yield. The Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas, and a red alga Porphyra sp. (both cultured since the 1700s) are the major products, but recently introduced species (yellowtail jack, red sea bream, two brown alga, and a scallop) have increased production significantly. Three types of

culture (stocking, sowing, and feeding) are described; cultural innovations and obstacles to increased production are also discussed.
