EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS FRIDAY, JULY 27 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Paraprofessional Session – Nutrition Educators are from Venus; Participants are from Mars: How Do We Meet Their Real Needs? SATURDAY, JULY 28 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. FNEE Pre-Conference Workshop – Curricula, Computers and Conversations: Strategies to Teach Diverse Audiences Crystal AB CPE 5.5 This session is designed for Extension specialists and educators working in nutrition at both the state and local level. With the introduction of MyPyramid in 2005, new ways to incorporate this tool into Extension programs will be explored. This session will analyze how MyPyramid is being applied in classes, what parts are being utilized, and what challenges MyPyramid has presented in teaching basic nutrition concepts. Additionally, the session will address the use of the learner-centered approach. A description of the learner-centered approach will be included and examples of programs employing this approach will be highlighted. Participants will share their experiences in using MyPyramid and the learner-centered approach. Ticket required for participation. Briggs Nutrition Science Symposium: Four Decades of Nutrition Education Policy: Building a Foundation for the Health of Future Generations Crystal AB CPE 1.5 As the Society for Nutrition Education marks its 40th Anniversary, join us as our keynote speakers reveal their experiences regarding the advancement of U.S. nutrition policies for disease prevention and health promotion. Dynamic leaders, who actively facilitated the development and implementation of critical policies, speak to the legislative progress made over the past four decades to support nutrition and health, and speak to what we can do today and beyond to honor their legacies through continued action. Moderators: Marilyn Briggs, RD, MS and Debra Palmer Keenan, PhD, Rutgers University. Speakers: Senator George McGovern; and Eileen Kennedy, PhD, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.
