Johanna T. Dwyer, DSc, RD, Wins 2014 Trailblazer Award

T

HE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION and Dietetics is pleased to announce that Johanna T. Dwyer, DSc, RD, a registered dietitian nutritionist and long-time Academy member, has received the inaugural 2014 Trailblazer Award and Lectureship for her exceptional nutrition knowledge, respect for other cultures, and understanding of food issues. Jointly bestowed by the Academy and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the recipient of this prestigious honor is determined by a jury of Academy and IFT leaders. The award is designed to recognize exceptional leaders who have demonstrated innovative contributions among underserved populations through at least one aspect of food science and technology, and have exhibited intellectual courage in research, instruction, and communication.

Johanna T. Dwyer Dwyer is a professor of Medicine and the senior nutrition scientist at the Jean Mayer US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging. She is also adjunct professor of Nutrition at Tufts University and Tufts Medical

Center, as well as senior nutrition scientist (contractor) in the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health. Dwyer received Master of Science and Doctor of Science degrees from Harvard School of Public Health, as well as a master’s degree in science from the University of Wisconsin. She is the author and coauthor of over 270 research articles and 300 review articles. She serves as the editor of Nutrition Today and co-editor of the Handbook of Nutrition and Food. She served on the 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee and is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine National Academy Sciences. Dwyer will receive the award and have the opportunity to present a lecture at IFT’s Annual Meeting & Food Expo in New Orleans, LA, in June 2014. The presentation of the Trailblazer award alternates annually between each organization’s annual meetings. The second Trailblazer Award will be presented at the 2015 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Nashville, TN.
