Book Review John H. Menkes and Harvey B. Sarnat, 2000. Child neurology, 6th ed., 1296 pages, ISBN: 0-7817-2385X, $120.00, Lippincott Williams and Wilkins The new edition of Child Neurology previously edited by John H. Menkes has appeared with Harvey B. Sarnat as coeditor and chapter author of neuroembryology, muscle diseases and neonatal neurology. The other 16 authors also contribute to the chapters of infectious diseases, cytogenetics, neuroimaging, neuroimmunology, neuro-oncology and mental development. The editors have preserved the initial aim of this textbook `to incorporate the knowledge derived from the basic neurologic science into the clinical evaluation and management of the child with neurologic disease' as mentioned in the ®rst edition, and actively absorbed the latest knowledge of basic science. On the other hand, the editors pay respect to the pioneers of neurology, and never cast aside their contributions in the process of updating the monograph. Many photographs and carefully arranged tables in this textbook

let general readers comprehend the contents more easily. Various comments are inserted on all subjects from molecular genetics to clinical treatment. They are simple, clear and well-balanced. Accordingly it takes only a short time to grasp the concept of a disease. The ®rst chapter starts from `Neurologic Examination of the Child and Infant' followed by `Metabolic Diseases of Nervous System'. This order is unique to this textbook, but as a whole all ®elds of child neurology are equally introduced with the latest and wellbalanced knowledge. In conclusion, for these reasons, this textbook is useful not only to child neurologists but also to general pediatricians, general practitioners, and medical students.
