FOCUS Sasol’s $11 bn project on track The first units at Sasol's Lake Charles chemical project (LCCP) in Louisiana, USA, will come online in 2018. Currently, the project is 64% complete and is still within the budget of $11 bn, the company reports. During an investors' site visit on 24 Mar 2017, Sasol revealed that the ethylene oxide reactor, the heaviest vessel of the build project, was due to be lifted into place during Apr 2017. Johnson Matthey & Rennovia sign glucaric acid licence agreement with ADM Johnson Matthey and Rennovia have signed a licence agreement with Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) to provide catalyst and process technology for the catalytic production of bio-based glucaric acid. The licensed process, jointly developed by Johnson Matthey and Rennovia, combines the efficiency and selectivity of heterogeneous catalytic process technology with the use of renewable feedstocks to produce bio-based glucaric acid. Glucaric acid is an emerging platform chemical that has a wide range of applications in the detergents and cleaners, concrete formulations, de-icing and anti-corrosion markets. ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS Evonik is acquiring Dr Straetmans to complement preservatives specialities portfolio Evonik will acquire cosmetics specialist Dr Straetmans GmbH of Hamburg,

Germany. Established in 1984, the company specializes in developing and marketing alternative preservatives for the cosmetic industry. Its portfolio also includes solubilizers and emulsifiers. The move allows Evonik to complement the broad specialities portfolio of its cosmetics business and to further consolidate its position as one of the leading global partners for the cosmetics industry. The transaction is subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities. It is expected to be finalized in 1H 2017. Dr Straetmans, which employs more than 60 people, will continue to operate as a legal entity. The company's Hamburg site will become Evonik's global competence centre for preservative solutions. The precise purchase price has not been disclosed but is thought to be just under €100 M. Evonik reported net operating profit of €2.17 bn in 2016, down 12%, while net profits decreased to €930 M. Sales increased by 3% but turnover decreased by 6% to €12.7 bn due to falling prices. The Performance Materials Division recorded a 6% drop in turnover to €3.2 bn but its net operating result increased by 20% to €371 M. During the year the company successfully acquired the speciality additives business from Air Products and is now acquiring Huber's silica business ['Focus on Surfactants', Mar & Feb 2017]. Evonik expects positive impulses in 2017 from its growth divisions Nutrition & Care and Resource Efficiency, as well as from the successful integration of the Air Products' business.
