COMPANY s*in;:. PROFILE
Johnson Pump (UK) engineering excellence into rotary lobe pumps Johnson Pump (‘UK) Ltd revolutionised traditional rotary lobe pump design in the early 1990s with the development and manufacture of its OnLine range of pumps. The company has been an integral part of the Viking Pump / IDEX organisation since 1992 and is the original manufacturer of the OnLine, Classic, Concept SQ and Albin SLP rotary lobe pumps. Obese products are manufactured solely by Jobnson Pump (UK), and have for some time been established brand leaders in many countries worldwide. The distribution arrangements between Jobnson Pump (Um Ltd and the Johnson Pump International AB group of companies have recently been terminated. The original products are now marketed through a new network of distributors in those countries and should not be confused with the substitute products now handled by the previous distributors.
The history of Johnson Pump (UK) Ltd The company was established in 1983 at Eastbourne, on the South coast of England. Initially it operated as a production unit for Evro Johnson Pumps. Manufacturing operations were gradually complemented by sales and marketing activity along with the introduction of a strong design and development team. Johnson Pump (UK) came into existence in early 1990. The British company’s track record for innovative design and product marketing had brought it to the attention of a wider audience, and in September 1992, Johnson Pump (UK), was acquired by Viking Pump Inc., a IJnit of IDEX Corporation, the well known fluid handling equipment producer. Founded in 1911, Viking Pump, is recognised as the leading manufacturer of rotary internal and external gear pumps. Located in Cedar Falls, Iowa IJSA, Viking has a worldwide presence, withoperations in the USA, Canada and Europe, and with sales offices in Mexico City, Beijing and Singapore.

The company’s OnLine concept is believed to be the first major design change to the standard rotary lobe pump since the early 1940s.

John McMurray, president of Viking Pump, describes the rationale behind its acquisition of Johnson Pump WK): “Viking’s acquisition provided Johnson Pump (UK) with funding for significant capital expansion, as well as improved sales channels outside Europe. There was also considerable synergy between us, and this set the stage for advanced new product developments. The British company added state of the art computational graphics and solids modelling techniques to its traditional engineering skills, and enhanced its manufacturing capabilities with CNC machining equipment. “The first fruits of this relationship were Johnson Pump (UK)‘s new Concept SQ pumps, introduced to food industry and pharmaceutical manufacturers in 1995. Indeed, with the backing of Viking Pump over the past five years, Johnson Pump (UK) has grown into one of the premier manufacturers of hygienic rotary lobe pumps in Europe. Its products have passed the rigorous test

Johnson Pump (UK) Ltd in Europe Bob Whittome, managing director of Johnson Pump (UK), has a clear view of the company’s strengths and its future direction: “Our vision of the future is to sustain the company’s growth well into the millennium” he says. “We already have a leading position in the UK and we see a

With their strong operating and financial presence in Europe and Scandinavia, it is anticipated that Johnson Pump (UK)‘s sales and market share will be extended even further. These new European marketing activities will be fully supported by Johnson Pump (UK)‘s applications engineering and product development expertise, which has flourished in its association with Viking Pump. This will ensure further product penetration in those markets which are dominated by higher levels of technology, operational The design process makes extensive use of the latest solid modelling techniques.

tremendous opportunity to develop our export markets. We are already busy establishing our presence further in North America with the help of our parent company as well as restructuring our European operations”. With regard to new products, the company is continuing to create advanced designs to add to their impressive portfolio. “In many respects,” Whittome explains, “our latest designs may well be considered ahead of their time. Certainly we expect that some of the features, several of which are patented, may well become standard requirements incorporated into future quality and safety legislation. To sustain the company’s future growth we are continuing to create advanced pump designs to add to our portfolio. To put that determination into perspective, more than half of our current turnover is generated from sales of pumps developed since the launch of OnLine in 1991.” The commitment to continual development is highlighted by the fact that Johnson Pumps
The use of new rapid prototyping techniques speeds up the development process.
(UK) has recently undergone an information technology upgrade company-wide, implementing a computer network to, amongst other things, improve its links with its worldwide operations and to provide dial-up facilities for its customers. According to Whittome, “engineering excellence, both in the design and the manufacturing process, lies at the core of Johnson Pump (UK). Indeed it was the radical re-design of the rotary lobe pump - the first in forty years - which produced our OnLine range. This has become the standard for food, pharmaceutical and process industries throughout Europe, but OnLine was not simply the result of inspired design. Its creation was based on a clear understanding of the needs of our customers. We listened to what the process industries were saying: about the need for improved cleanliness, and the benefits which would result from reducing the long maintenance procedures for standard pumps. “In a similar vein, the Concept SQ series was the product of research by Johnson Pump (UK), which anticipated more stringent health and safety regulations. The demand for hygiene-critical and aseptic process environments were driving the development of Sterilise In Place equipment for the European process industries. It was an
understanding of these critical hygienic issues which allowed us to develop Concept SQ the first rotary lobe pump to meet these stringent hygienic requirements. “We have excellent development facilities which also provide a hard commercial edge and benefits for Johnson Pump (UK) customers”, says Whittome. “Our CAD and related solid modelling techniques coupled with our flexible manufacturing capabilities enable us to meet customers needs for tailor-made applications related products. This is extremely useful in developing our business and forging stronger customer relationships. Johnson Pump (UK) remains mindful, however, that the personal touch is still important. “We have a perfect balance here,” notes Whittome, “we are part of a large, well organised and commercially powerful American based concern, offering a wide range of fluid handling solutions, but we retain the personal approach of a smaller operation. We believe that this has been another factor in taking us to the top - and that’s where we intend to stay.” Contact: Johnson Pump (UK) Ltd, Highfield Industrial Estate, Edison Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex BN23 6PT, UK.
