Joints With Fillet Welds. Frantisek Faltus, Elsevier Science Publishers,
Amsterdam, 1986, 302 pages, $68.50. Since the actual stress field in a welded joint is complex and difficult to evaluate, standard design methods are based on more easily calculated average stresses and achieve reliability by imposing empirically determined stress limits. This monograph, which is devoted enitrely to the problem of predicting the stresses in fillet-welded joints, offers some useful refinements to the standard methods, primarily in the treatment of welded joint plasticity. The centerpiece of the monograph is the development and illustration of a"step-by-step plastification method" for calculating deformations and stresses in a welded joint during progressive yielding. The essential features of this method are discrete modeling of the weld joint and simulation of progressive plasticity by successive yielding of the individual discrete elements. The illustrations of the method include several solved problems, showing both manually calculated and computer calculated results. The predictions of the method are supported by extensive experimental results, which themselves comprise a quarter of the book. The author, who is Emeritus Professor at the Czech Technical University, has drawn on over 55 years of professional experience to present an interesting treatment of this rather specialized topic. The book was originally published in the Czech language, but the translation, though occasionally clumsy, is always comprehensible. The mathematical notation is extensive, but logically chosen and easily followed. American readers should note that commas, not periods, are used as decimal points, and the units are metric, but not SI. The treatment of the subject is both clear and well developed. This book presents a technique for evaluating welded joints that could be effectively applied in several areas of structural design and analysis, and © Elsevier Science Publishing Co., Inc., 1986
