EDITORIAL

Jonathan Wirtschafter, MD We are saddened by Dr. Jonathan Wirtschafter’s death on August 9, 2004. Dr. Wirtschafter joined the Editorial Board of Survey of Ophthalmology in 1983 as founding editor of the section Afterimages. A talented neuro-ophthalmologist, he was creatively involved in all aspects of his career—clinical practice, research, administration, and teaching. In the 1980s, ophthalmology was being flooded with new, refined diagnostic techniques and images that were capable of defining the location or pathophysiology of signs and features of specific diseases. Dr. Wirtschafter recognized the importance of these images as valuable teaching modes for the practice of ophthalmology. Recognizing the need to educate ophthalmologists about the enormous array of new tools available to

them, he proposed the creation of a Survey section that would publish articles that would illustrate how a feature not detected by other techniques could become vividly visible when a specialized technique was applied. Over the years, Dr. Wirtschafter, with his co-editor, Dr. Andrew Harrison, directed the development and publication of numerous articles that have provided valuable education for our readers. We will miss Dr. Wirtschafter’s active presence at Survey and will continue to appreciate him though the legacy he created in Afterimages. Bernard Schwartz, MD, PhD Editor-in-Chief
