FOCUS alumina, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and inorganically modified barium sulfate. Silica also behaves in the same manner, and in the first stage of reaction the surface hydroxyl groups react with the alkoxysilane, replacing all three alkoxy groups with hydroxyl groups. to form covalent bonds. The silanols generated also react with hydroxyl groups on the particle surface to increase the covalent hold on the pigment particle. The organic tail can now react with the binder in a more effective manner than the simple surface treatments described earlier and this stronger link between particle and binder is termed “surface functionalization”. The importance of this treatment is shown by improved resistance of a polyester-based powder coating to water and chemical attack. The authors quote an example in which the standard synthetic barium sulfate is replaced by an equal quantity of functionalized barium sulfate. This modification not only reduced fading but also improved blanching resistance when the coated panel was subjected to the hot water test at 80°C for 24 hours. It was additionally shown that curing of the binder is improved, with improved scratch resistance, by use of the functionalized barium sulfate, while the optical and mechanical properties are unaffected. was flat versus the prior year, and price was down 2%. Dow Building and Construction reported sales gains across all geographic areas, except Europe, where the construction industry continues to contract. Dow Water and Process Solutions reported record 1Q 2012 sales, with gains in both price and volume. Demand continued to be particularly strong in reverse osmosis membranes in industrial water applications. Dow Coating Materials reported a decrease in sales as price declines more than offset a modest increase in volume. In architectural coatings, volume declined in most geographic areas, driven in part by the lack of customer inventory restocking witnessed in 1Q 2011 as industry-wide supply issues abated in the latter part of 2010. Equity earnings were $22 M, down from $68 M in 1Q 2011, primarily due to lower results from Dow Corning. EBITDA for the segment was $204 M, which included a $41 M restructuring charge. This compares with EBITDA of $250 M in 1Q 2011. Key results are tabulated. Jotun’s revenues up 9% in 2011 Jotun A/S’s long-term growth trend continued in 2011 with improved sales in most segments and divisions, due to improved markets in Asia and parts of the Middle East. The company reported operating revenues of NKR 10.7 bn in 2011, up from NKR 9.8 bn in 2010. Operating profit was NKR 956 M in 2011, compared with NKR 1240 M in 2010, due mainly to higher raw materials prices. Jotun sold more paint in volume and value terms in 2011 than in 2010. Its margins and profits were affected by high costs of major raw materials such as epoxies, titanium dioxide, acrylics and metals. Higher sales in parts of Asia and the Middle East offset slower sales in
C O AT I N G S Europe, while operations in the Middle East were affected by the Arab Spring. Jotun’s equity ratio was 55% at the end of 2011. The company had sufficient liquidity and low interest bearing debt. Its cash and cash equivalents stood at NKR 618 M at year-end, and the company had undrawn credit facilities totalling NKR 1.425 bn. BASF’s financial director looking to cheap natural gas in the US BASF wants to profit more from the boom in natural gas in the US. This raw material, which is so important to the chemical industry, is currently only half as expensive as it was a year ago. This brings clear competitive advantages. BASF wants to increase its sales in N America by 5%/y to 2020. The company expects the US economy to grow 2% in 2012. It is feeling the effects of the upward trend in the auto industry, for which it produces coatings and catalysts among other things.
