New Periodicals Review Journal of Clinical Apheresis, Vol. 1, No. 1, 1982. Alan R. Liss, Inc., New York. Editor-in-Chief: C. Harold Mielke, Jr. (San Francisco, CA, U.S.A.). Subscr. Vol. 1 $ 70 in U.S., $ 81 in Europe, Middle East and Africa. This quarterly is to publish articles dealing with the research on and applications of apheresis, i.e. removal from circulating blood of abnormal cells a n d / o r plasma proteins or the depletion of excessive amounts of otherwise normal components. This modern form of the blood-letting therapy is used in treating various disorders of autoimmune origin, alone or in conjunction with immunosuppressive drugs. The 1st issue contains 8 original articles, a special report and a brief communication. The topics include experimental studies on the removal of specific antibody in vivo, plasmapheresis in lupus nephritis, improvement in childhood chronic relapsing polyneuropathy after plasmapheresis, plasma exchange in the treatment of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, lymphoplasmapheresis in the management of acute renal graft rejection, leukocyte transfusion in treating neonatal sepsis, and a description of equipment used in automated haemapheresis. In the special report the authors evaluate the experience at the U.S. National Institutes of Health in the use of apheresis for treating rheumatoid arthritis patients. The brief communication describes a technique for easy vascular access in patients undergoing plasmapheresis. The many aspects of apheresis presented here seem to justify the initiation of this pubhcation as an aid in developing and perfecting the therapeutic techniques of immunohaematology. F. Borek
