Editorial
Journal of Dentistry – The future It is my great pleasure to write my first Editorial as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dentistry. Writing this editorial in a London coffee shop on a rainy Saturday morning – in a city steeped in history, tradition and leadership that impacts on so many aspects of our life – reminds me of the role and importance of the Journal of Dentistry in the contemporary practise of clinical dentistry. The Journal has been to the forefront of advances in clinical dentistry over the past 30 years. Having a proud and successful heritage, with eminent former Editors-in-Chief such as Professor Nairn Wilson (1986–2000) and Professor Damien Walmsley (2002–2011), the challenge for the Journal is to move forward into the second decade of this millennium and beyond. In assuming the position of Editor-in-Chief, I wish to set out my vision for the Journal as placing an emphasis on publishing, amongst others, high-quality novel oral and dental research with the anticipated impact of influencing the practise of dentistry at clinician, researcher, industry-leader and policy-maker levels on an international basis. To do this, I welcome submission of high-quality clinical, translational and basic science research and authoritative review articles. The scope of the Journal is to be widened, and in addition to topics currently published (including Biomaterials and Restorative Dentistry) I welcome new manuscript submissions in relation to: translational basic science and molecular biology research with relevance to clinical dentistry; periodontology; endodontics; further high-quality reviews, including systematic reviews. As Editor-in-Chief, I am grateful to have the support of a strong and dynamic team of Associate Editors and Editorial Board. As you know the Journal is now owned by Elsevier Publishing and we are extremely fortunate to have access to an internationally leading organisation, including Jane Ryley and her team in St. Louis, USA and Julie Millard and her team in Exeter, UK. Manuscript submission and review is now carried out electronically and it is my aim return a first decision on a manuscript within 30 days of submission. I am
always available for direct correspondence with authors and interested parties. Finally, as I begin this journey, I am very grateful for the support of you, the readership of Journal of Dentistry. Without your research questions, your novel ideas, your desire to share your knowledge – which manifest ultimately as your quality submissions, the Journal could not survive. The desire that motivates editorial writing on a rainy Saturday morning in London – the goal of publishing high quality research that can impact on the practise of dentistry on a global setting – is shared by research teams and clinicians the world over who similarly work for the betterment of the dental clinical and research community. The Journal of Dentistry is truly an international player in the field of oral and dental research. Its future is in all of our hands. Let’s make a difference.
An appreciation I am delighted to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the achievements of Professor Damien Walmsley during his nine year tenure as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Dentistry. Building on the Journal’s proud tradition in oral and dental research, Damien successfully led the Journal through the last decade. The Journal is all the stronger and more internationallyrespected because of his efforts. Damien has performed a difficult and onerous task in an exemplary fashion. The new Editorial Team, Journal readership and the profession owe him a debt of gratitude for enriching the Journal as well as promoting the sharing of oral and dental research on a worldwide basis – which has ultimately been for the betterment and advancement of dentistry.
