Donaldson Aims and Scope The Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering aims to integrate petroleum-related disciplines to enhance knowledge of reservoirs and reservoir behaviour. Key topics included in the journal are: Reservoir Studies (characterization, simulation, monitoring, engineering). Petroleum Engineering (enhanced oil recovery, well logging, testing and evaluation, drilling and drilling fluids, fluid mechanics in porous media, production engineering, formation evaluation, completion and simulation). Petroleum Geology (geostatistics, rock mechanics, petrophysics, reservoir geology, mineral diagenesis). Petroleum Geochemistry (production geochemistry, reservoir infilling processes, kinetics of oil and gas cracking, intra-reservoir alteration, intra-reservoir bitumen, high pressure-high temperature conditions). Petroleum Geophysics (reservoir scale geophysics, 3-D and 4-D seismic imaging, vertical seismic profiling, crosswell profiling, seismic attribute analysis, seismic stratigraphy). In addition to peer-reviewed scientific and technical research papers, the Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering publishes the following: Opinion Section: An “Opinion Section” is provided for timely expression of views and ideas in the petroleum industry and associated research centres. The objective is to produce a column which addresses developments in an interesting and lively manner. These submissions will be dealt with by the Editors-in-Chief and the Publisher, reviewed for reasonableness and published as rapidly as possible. The full text of these papers will also be available at our Internet location. Case Histories: A case history should integrate data from several disciplines to explain how a prospective area was explored and/or developed. Ideally, this integrated story would combine elements of geology, geophysics, petrophysics and reservoir engineering. The objectives of a case history paper are to explain which data were used to evaluate a prospect or reservoir system, the type of analysis procedures that were employed, and the conclusions which were reached, so that others can decide which type of data and which methodologies would be most effective for evaluating the properties that they manage or explore. Review Papers: A review paper provides an overview of a specific topic which is of general interest to a significant segment of the journal readership. The topic being discussed can be a technology which has been practised for a number of years, or a new emerging technology which appears to offer great promise. A review paper should be structured so that it informs and educates those who have had little exposure to the subject matter under discussion, rather than as a exposition to further the scientific concepts of the subject. Examples of review papers could be a discussion of crosswell seismic profiling (an emerging geophysical technology), structured so that it informs reservoir engineers and development geologists on the way in which crosswell technology can help them evaluate reservoir systems, or an explanation of the current global positioning (GPS) technology, to inform all geoscientists about methods by which they can access and use GPS data in their respective disciplines. Special Issues and Theme Papers. On a regular basis, issues dedicated to a single topic will be considered for inclusion in the journal. The material can either be derived from a workshop or conference, or be collected on the initiative of a Guest Editor. All proposals for special issues and theme papers will be evaluated by the editorial team. Some papers might be received as unsolicited manuscripts and will be held, with the author’s consent, for the proper theme-related volume. Language The official language of the journal is English. Preparation of the text (a) The manuscript should preferably be prepared on a word processor and printed with double spacing and wide margins and include an abstract of not more than 500 words. Also provide 4 to 6 keywords. These must be taken from the most recent edition of the AGI GeoRef Thesaurus and should be placed beneath the abstract. (b) Authors should use IUGS terminology. The use of S.I. units is also recommended. (c) The title page should include the name(s) of the author(s) and their affiliations, fax and e-mail numbers. In case of more than one author, please indicate to whom the correspondence should be addressed. References (a) References in the text consist of the surname of the author(s), followed by the year of publication in parentheses. All references cited in the text should be given in the reference list and vice versa. (b) The reference list should be in alphabetical order. Tables Tables should be compiled on separate sheets and should be numbered according to their sequence in the text. Tables can also be sent as glossy prints to avoid errors in typesetting. Illustrations (a) All illustrations should be numbered consecutively and referred to in the text. (b) Drawings should be lettered throughout, the size of the lettering being appropriate to that of the drawings, but taking into account the possible need for reduction in size. The page format of the journal should be considered in designing the drawings. (c) Photographs must be of good quality, printed on glossy paper. (d) Figure captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. (e) If contributors wish to have their original figures returned this should be requested in proof stage at the latest. (f) Colour figures can be accepted providing the reproduction costs are met by the author. Please consult the publisher for further information. Page proofs One set of page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author, to be checked for typesetting / editing. The author is not expected to make changes or corrections that constitute departures from the article in its accepted form. Proofs should be returned within 3 days. Reprints Twenty-five reprints of each article are supplied free of charge. Additional reprints can be ordered on a reprint order form which will be sent to the corresponding author upon receipt of the accepted article by the publisher. One hundred reprints of Review Papers are supplied free of charge. SUBMISSION OF ELECTRONIC TEXT Authors are requested to submit the final text on a 3.5" or 5.25" diskette. Both double density (DD) and high density (HD) diskettes are acceptable. Make sure, however, that the diskettes are formatted according to their capacity (HD or DD) before copying the files onto them. As with the requirements for manuscript submission, the main text, list of references, tables and figure captions should be stored in separate text files with clearly identifiable file names. The format of these files depends on the word processor used. Texts written with Display Write, MultiMate, Microsoft Word, Samna Word, Sprint, TEX, Volkswriter, Wang PC, WordMARC, WordPerfect and Wordstar or supplied in DCA / RFT or DEC / DX format can be readily processed. In all other cases the preferred format is DOS text or ASCII. It is essential that the name and version of the word processing program, the type of computer on which the text was prepared, and format of the text files are clearly indicated. Authors are requested to ensure that the contents of the diskette correspond exactly to the contents of the hard copy manuscript. Discrepancies can lead to proofs of the wrong version being made. The word processed text should be in single column format. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible; in particular, do not use the word processor’s options to justify or to hyphenate the words.
