Lifeline Anne Ducros studied medicine and neurology in Montpellier, France. She completed a stroke and headache fellowship in the Lariboisière Hospital, and gained a PhD in neuroscience at the University Pierre and Marie Curie, in Paris. She is co-head of the Lariboisière Emergency Headache Centre. What has been the greatest achievement of your career? I hope the greatest achievement is still to come. Which research patient has had most effect on your work, and why? As a resident, I remember a man who felt dizzy at the beach, became comatose a few hours later, and died within a week. No cause was found despite exhaustive investigations and autopsy. I hope to contribute to elucidating some of the many unresolved neurological issues.

If you had not entered your current profession, what would you have liked to do? Be a mountain guide. What would be your advice to a newly qualified doctor? Do your best, and ask for help when you don’t know. How do you relax? I used to climb mountains, rocks, and icefalls. As a mother, I now relax reading thrillers in the metro on the way home or to hospital. What is your greatest regret? That in France, headache and migraine are still considered as minor fields in neurology. What apart from your family is the passion of your life? The beauties of nature. I wish to travel around the world to discover as many as possible. What is your greatest fear? That something bad will happen to my 3-year-old daughter. What are you currently reading? Hypothermia by Arnaldur Indridason, an Icelandic writer. How would you improve the public’s understanding of research? By promoting the education of young children. I would suggest stimulating their interest while they are observing a natural phenomenon, teaching them to discuss and formulate hypotheses, and encouraging them to test these hypotheses by searching documents or doing simple experiments. What was your first experiment as a child? I tried to teach snails how to swim, but they weren’t gifted. What one discovery or invention would most improve your life? Teleportation.
