Proceedings of 19 International Workshop on Rare Earth Permanent Magnets & Their Applications
Karl Strnat Lives in Our Heart for Ever and Ever! Series Workshop on Rare Earth Magnets and Their Applications was initiated by Prof. Karl Strnat since 1975. In order to popularize the knowledge on rare earth magnets invented by him in late 60s, particularly, to teach people how to prepare and use such magnets, Prof. Karl Strnat got an idea to organize a workshop, to provide an platform for exchanging idea and experiences among scientists, engineers and users of rare earth magnets. A preferential treatment has been given to students and youth. Purpose of such Workshop is to popularize the knowledge concerning rare earth magnets, including production process, measurements and possible applications. From very beginning Karl Strnat gave emphasis on that workshop should not involve only science and technology, but indust.w,.especially the people of magnetic circuit design and applications should be involved too. He placed great hopes on the youth. So he set up a principle to accept all contribution papers, except those containing fundamental errors. The non well considered opinion of youth should be allowed to express. He wished that such Workshop will be held not only in developed countries, such as USA, but also should be held in developing countries. A brief historical summary of such Workshop is given in Table 1. China as a new comer in this area enjoyed the favor given by Karl Strnat very much. He practised whatpreached: He visited China several times during early 80s including rare earth deposits located in North and South China. Where he gave lectures in Universities and research institutes so patiently, that to teach people on magnetism just from "alphabet", and to share his experiences in preparing and using magnets openly. He helped many young Chinese students to continue their studies in US. Due to his efforts China was able to hold Table 1 International workshop on REPM and their applications No.

Proceedings of 19th International Workshop on Rare Earth Permanent Magnets & Their Applications
the 7 th International Workshop on REPM in August, 1983. As a saying "drinking water, the person who dug the well should never be forgotten". The contribution of Karl Stmat to developing and spreading rare earth magnets in China should never be forgotten as well! In order to keep this Workshop be continued, he suggested to establish a Committee of International Advisors, the members should be selected from countries all over the world under two basic considerations: a) working on the field of rare earth magnets for many years; b) willing to make contribution for continuing this workshop actively, including taking participant to select location for coming Workshop held four years later, to recommend invited speakers for coming Workshop etc. The members are not permanent, they would be changed time by time in accordance with the global magnet situation. According to his suggestion International Advisory Committee (lAC) was established in 1990, during II th Workshop held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
Since the pass of Karl Strnat in 1991, lAC members gradually changed. The members of lAC are enlarged during this Workshop, especially members from Asia and East Europe are increased. We do wish that such change would reflect the current changing situation and benefit for Workshop in future.
