In conclusion, we suggest that ferritin loses a part of its iron on passage from the liver cell to the blood. This might happen not only in iron overload and liver cell leakage but also in other circumstances, because almost always serum ferritin seems to be a modified product of the tissue (blood cell) ferritins [3]. This principle might be overruled in some cases of severe liver cell (perhaps other cell) leakage. Then, ferritin with a higher iron content will enter the blood. Of course in cases with a low iron content in liver (or other tissue) ferritins, as in advanced iron mobilization, serum ferritin will always be low in its mean iron content. KEY-WORD SYSTEM OF INDEXING

A key-word system of indexing has been introduced by Elsevier/North-Holland Biomedical Press, publishers of Clinica Chimica Acta. Authors are requested to select a maximum of six key words and include them with the submitted typescript. The words will be used in the compilation of the annual cumulative index, but will not be published with the article itself. Authors are reminded that since titles are widely used in information retrieval systems, as many key words as possible should appear in the title of the paper.
