2367. Some features of thermionic emission from aluminium thin films. (USSR)
oxide
Thermionic emission from thin films of aluminium oxide with thickness of 15 to 20 pm, deposited by electrophoresis on polycrystalline tungsten ribbon, is investigated. The emitters were heated to 1900’K in a vacuum of IO-* torr for a long time to obtain stable and reproducible emission characteristics. It is found that the polarization of the dielectric in the internal field, appearing at 1450”K, strongly influences the electron emission from aluminium oxide. This polarization appears relatively rapidly and it depends on the magnitude of external positive voltage. The depolarization proceeds considerably slower, it strongly depends on the sign and magnitude of the external voltage and in some cases it possesses rather complex characteristics. It is proposed that electron processes in the dielectric layei play a considerable role in the observed polarization. V G Bazanov et al, Zh Tekh Fiz, 45 (3). 1975. 676-678 (ifi Russian). I2

2379. Investigation of the formation of ion beams in vacuum diode. (USSR) It is shown that ion beams can be generated during the high-voltage stage of a vacuum discharge. Mass composition, energy and time characteristics of ion beams generated in a vacuum diode are investigated. The breakdown was performed between a tip cathode and anodes of AI, Cu, MO and W. The cathode tip was mounted on a disc under an angle of 10” with respect to the axis of an interelectrode gap of 0.3 to 5 mm length. The ion beam generated in the vacuum diode was transmitted through a 3 mm opening in the cathode disc into a Thomson mass spectrograph. The pressure in the massspectrograph chamber was 1 x 10m5 torr. Positive voltage pulses with amplitudes of 10 to 30 kV, length of 5 to 150 nsec and rise time of 2 nsec were applied to the anode of the vacuum diode. It is found that ions are formed in the anode region under the action of the electron beam. The independence of the mass composition of the ion beam from the electrode material indicates that mainly gas molecules
