A d i s p e r s i o n relation is derived for ultrasound in an a n i s o t r o p i c p i e z o e l e c t r i c s e m i c o n d u c t o r in the p r e sence of an alternating e l e c t r i c field whose frequency is much higher than the collision frequency of elect r o n s with impurities, phonons, etc. When the field f r e q u e n c y is much higher than the u l t r a s o n i c frequency the coefficient of absorption of ultrasound by conduction e l e c t r o n s is an oscillating function of the field amplitude. By m e a s u r i n g the oscillation period for v a r i o u s relative d i r e c t i o n s between the field v.ector and u l t r a s o n i c wave vector it is possible to determine all the components of the effective m a s s tensor. A proposed resolution test for ultrasonic angle beam probes Chapman, H. Vol 29, No 1 (January 1971) p p l - 7 R e s u l t s are p r e s e n t e d of a study on an experimental verification of a resolution test for u l t r a s o n i c angle beam probes. A t a r g e t is proposed consisting of a group of three small, in-line holes with finished bore. The interaction between the pitch of the holes and the attitude of the l a r g e s t group to the sound beam is shown. Test blocks are proposed that maintain a

c o m m o n p r o b e - t o - t a r g e t distance and take into account the frequency of the sound as well as the attitude of the t a r g e t to the sound beam. Other models of test blocks f r o m the literature a r e c o m p a r e d with the p r o posed blocks. Vol 29, No 1 (January 1971) ppS-12 A description is given of various types of ultrasonic d i r e c t - r e a d i n g wall-thickness m e t e r s . The implications of the type of instrument as r e g a r d s the indication e r r o r are discussed. The behaviour of different i n s t r u m e n t - p r o b e combinations can be c o m p a r e d with the aid of d i a g r a m s showing the depth Characteristic and the useful operating area. The influence of t e m p e r a t u r e on probe and object is analyzed.
