KLAUS RIEGEL 1927-1977

Some human beings possess that special quality which permits them to brighten the lives of those whom they encounter. Our friend and colleague, a member of the editorial board since our inception, possessed this and other unique qualities to a most unusual degree. We were deeply moved by his untimely death at age 51 on July 3, 1977, and will miss both the radiant cheer and encouragement he emanated and the imaginative and incisive intellect he possessed. Your Editor-in-Chief grew to know and love Klaus and what he stood for through encounters at meetings of the Gerontological Society during the last decades. An hour spent in discussions with him prompted many hours of additional thought. Of his publications, which ranged over many aspects of developmental psychology, one in particular regarding a novel synthesis of some of Piaget's concepts stands out. Klaus Riegel did his undergraduate studies at the University of Hamburg, obtained his M.A. at the University of Minnesota and his Ph.D. at the University of Hamburg (1958). He made many notable contributions, particularly in the assessment of the development and aging of intellectual functions, psycholinguistics, and the history and philosophy of the social sciences. Among the many honors he received was the Robert W. Kleemeier Award by the Gerontological Society in 1976. He was editor of the international journal, Human Development, from 1970 onward. We will miss you, dear friend, but are grateful for the fact that you have blessed so many lives and inspired so many who will explore further the pathways you have opened. To you, Ruth, we extend our hands. What can one say? B. Strehler J. Birren
